I have a 2006 350 King ranch with a 6L diesel. When I'm making a left turn, the steering wheel locks up on the way back.It locks as if there is no power steering, If I continue pulling on the steering wheel it will aventurally release or if I jerk the steering back to the left it will instantly release. This problem only occurs when turning left and doesn't do it all the time. I've bought it to 2 garages and they expieced the problem but no solutions. When my 3 year old is with me I'm very nerves about this issue because this problem has occured during a fish tail experience. Any suggestion/solutions would be highly appriciated.
Im going to just throw this out there since I have never experienced this on a truck. I had a combine one time steer really easy one way and the other you had to have almost two people turn it. It ended up being air in the line. Maybe if you check your powersteering hoses you will find a bad spot???
If you are able to put your front end on jack stands and reinact the incident, you might be able to figure it out. Do you have a front end stabilizer shock? Try steering lock to lock in the air with it on jack stands with stabilizer on and then off. Also, check all ball joints and locator bar which goes from frame to axle to stop from the axle going sidways. The only other possibility is the steering box and guys have had trouble with these getting sticky, has yours been adjusted, because over tightening can cause it to get sticky and prematurely wear out. This might cause the dead spot you are talking about. For something this serious if you are not so inclined, I would take it to a front end shop and have them look into it. Could be serious trying to drive when you can get stuck not being able to steer like this, I go so far as to say try this stuff in the driveway before moving it or have it towed to the shop. Consequences are to serious if it happens again in traffic....
Thanks for the feed back. One person had mentioned it could be the bar that goes throw the steer box may have a hump in it. Would't you think that if that was the case it would do it every time. I'm tring to keep track when it does it ex- when it's cold when it is hot but no luck. I have had it do this 3 left turns in a row but than good for 4 days. I'm a carpenter not a mechanic so me terms may not be correct.
Had this problem myself
Your front u joints could be seized or seizing, if you haven't greased the joints lately do it now , if your joints are always turning because they are not releasing this will screw with your steering.
good luck Don
