I have a '73 Ford F-250 3/4 ton 4x4 C-6 Auto with a 390ci MILDLY BUILT with a holley 500cfm 2 brrl carb, heddman headers, chrome air cleaner new heads, crane cam, etc. My questions is, Will a 3inch dual exhaust with 30" glasspacks (blue streak) with 5 inch chrome cans work and sound good on my truck? What type and kind of sound will I have? Will it be super loud or will it have a super rumble to it? Will there be crackle when I let of the accelerator? Is there going to be enough backpressure? Thanks,
Actually there will be MeanStreak Mufflers with 4" 18" long cans instead of glasspacks and 5" cans. That should change the tone right?
Thanks Lewis J. Wilczek
a very loud low throaty tone. it will cackle like a screaming demon, and it will sound awesome. you might want to go to 2 1/2 inch or at least down to 2 3/4 inch pipes, 3 inch might be a bit much for a mild 390. also, may I ask, why a 2bbl??
I went to a 2bbl because that is what came with the motor from the factory and the truck is an everyday driver and I think some day I will put a four on but for now it's and everyday truck so I would like to have as much gas mileage as I can.
hes right. a moderate 4bbl with vacuum secondaries would be perfect for your application. the other 2 barrels only come into play when you get on the gas.
um... 2bbl carb. every day driver? you dont want 3" duals. you want 21/4" pipes into 40 series flows,(they're louder than 30's). and get a good 4bbl, you wont be disappointed.
Well, Guess what? I put 3 inch dual pipes with 24" x 4" chrome cans at 90's infront of the wheels on 3-6-02, and that is by far the best and coolest most crackling exhaust I have ever heard. I paid $238 including tax and I think my money was well spent. When you stand in front of the can, you can feel you chest pound when the RPM's are around 5500. I am definetaly letting my motor breath now. Backpressure is no problem because people run open headers all the time and now there is even pipe there to help out, so I have plenty of backpressure. I probably gained about 10 extra ponies on my engine compared to the 2" pipe some moron put on the truck before me. Well to wrap my speech up, I like what I have, and on the carburator situation, I am happy too. A Holley 500 2brrl is doing just fine. Yet I am not stopping anyone who says 4brrl's are better to buy and send a new 4brrl intake and 4brrl carb. to me. Thanks Anyways

P.S. I think Flowmasters are worthless. Worthless mufflers are for worthless vehicles...Like Chevy's!
well, thanks for asking for advice. advice is very useful when its completely ignored. but who am I to tell you what to do? if you're happy and it works thats all that matters. 3" is cooler anyway if you can make it work.
>P.S. I think Flowmasters are worthless. Worthless mufflers

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally like the sound of Flowmasters. I have one on my truck now(single in/dual out) and would put them on again. I've had everything on my trucks from glasspacks to straight pipes to open headers and I like the Flowmaster the best. To each their own
I didn't impose that I was ignoring you advice I just thought there were others out there that could look into this situation of performance engines that would aquire a free flowing performance exhaust. In research it has been shown that 3 to 3.5 inch exhaust tubing has increased horsepower, gas mileage, and torque than any other pipe size. Any performance race car mechanic or crew member will tell you that a larger exhaust (3 to 3.5) will allow better flow than 2.5 or 2.75 inch tubing. I think the smaller tubing is for the "penny pincher" who can't afford the more expensive and better performing pipe or the person that wants the quiet muffler street exhaust. Which is fine for some one to have a quiet exhaust with small pipe and mufflers, because that way you don't have the Highway patrol on you tail all the time. But for me that is not a big issue. I put 3 inch with cans and it isn't super loud but has an awesome deep tone.

P.S. My first question may have been premature, until I did indepth reasearch on my own. Ideas and input are always worth considering, and yes I am very satisfied with my results. Thanks everybody we'll all stay in touch.
