Good Question. I bet they are purely for looks. However, it seems that the mufflers are pretty big which, if designed properly, could result in low restriction, though this would be true also of big mufflers laying along the running boards. Can't say I've ever seen the stacks on any pickup but the late 70s Dodge.
What year is your truck? If you are seriously considering it, you need to check with federal regulations on modifying the exhaust. Personally, I think that stacks are ugly. They don't really do that much for performance. Everything that you can do with stacks, can also be done under the truck. One thing that I would look into is making the pipe as straight as possible and running it out the back of the truck. With headers, the right mufflers, and straight pipes you'll gain some noticible performance.
Stacks don't look too bad on a FlareSide, but, they are mostly for looks, the stacks on the Dodge Lil Red Trucks were for show, the mufflers were under the cab, and the stacks were basically tailpipes.

I know that the smoke stacks were a very rare factory option on the F series in the late 70's. I remember seeing one around my hometown, it was a Ford Stepside 4x4. Looked pretty cool, but I would never do it on my truck.
I think stacks look great! Heres my mud truck with 4" stacks on it, I just run straight pipes into the stacks so its pretty loud, but obviously a truck built only for offroading.

I think they look good and I like the way they sound, with the noise behind the cab. They are great for mudding and water because they keep the outlets high and out of the mud. The only thing that I don't like about them is when my buddy put them on his truck, he had to put holes in the bed floor for them to go up through and sometimes they get in the way of hauling things.

That is one hell of a truck. Is that the orginal engine or did you get it from somewhere?
I must say that one of the best sounding trucks I have ever heard was a Ford disel (pre-Powerstroke) with smoke stacks on it. I could be 2 miles down the road and still hear that truck crank up. Thank god I live in Alabama or else law enforcement officials might actually care.
i think that whoever thinks stacks are dumb, should be strung up, i am gona be puting 5 inch dual stacks on my 1979/83 F-250 with a flat bed! and it will put all of you who dont like stacks to shame!!!
