Exclamation E4OD woes/questions

I have a 1994 F-150 5.8L with the E4OD. This truck only has 83K original miles.
I have a few symptoms which is making me think my tranny might be going out.

1. Shifting from park to D or R is kind of hard (as in physically). Especially when I am on a hill and I put it in park, and it rolls to a stop, then try to shift it in gear it takes some force.

2. The shift indicator no longer works.

3. It clangs into gear.

4. Shifting from 1-4 gear is smooth, but when the truck goes into 4th and I try to give it gas (Like on the highway to pass) it will make a grinding type noise and you can feel vibration on the floorboard. It will stop immediately when I back off the gas pedal.

The transmission is not slipping, accelerates fine from stop, and like I said, it only has 83K miles on it.

Any help would be appreciated.

its sounds like ur troqe conveter is going out, the shift indicator should be a easy fix, i have the same truck as u and i broke mine but fixed it with super glue, u need to take the black dash bezel that goes around ur steering wheel off Put it 3 gear when u do this it makes it easy and wont risk breaking it agian, make sure u use the e brake, when u have that off look to the right off the steering wheel by the key there should be a wire that hooks up to a lever follow that wire and there should be a white piece of plastic thats broken glue that back together that should be ur prob let me know if u have troble ill try to post some pics of u didnt figure it out

Is your truck a 4x4?
I recently broke both my motor mounts on my 91 4x4 and had pretty much all the symtoms you described.
The hard to shift was mainly when i was off road especially on a hill if i needed to downshift while starting to bog down or when stopped on a hill.

The grinding like you described was my front drive shaft rubbing on my tranny cross member. (It left a mark)

Put a floor jack with a piece of wood under your oil pan and slowly lift on it, see if your engine mounts are seperated.

Beamed- I will try that, thanks.

The truck is not 4x4.

The problem is, when I get on the gas it will go through the gears fine. If I accelerate slowly, that is when it starts to make the grinding type noise in 4th gear, but it will stop as soon as I back off the gas.
I checked the tranny fluid today and it looks good and is not low.
I hope it is the tc, but the fact that it requires some force to put it into D or R and it also clangs into gear makes me feel like it is the transmission.
Anyone else have this problem before?

Good suggestion from CW to check the engine and trans. mounts. I would also check the driveshaft universal joints for play.As for needing a lot of force to move the shift lever this has nothing to do with the trans. Sounds like the shift linkage is binding somewhere.

I re-read your first post. Your truck being a 94 it should be a cable instead of linkage. Make sure the cable isnt broken somewhere as well.

Just wanted to update this post in case someone comes searching for the solution to the same problem.
I took it to the transmission shop today and found out it was the torque converter clutch that was causing the grinding noise.
They are going to inspect the tranny to find out if anything was damaged due to this (hopefully not).
Thanks for the help guys.
