Extract that Borla!
Extract that Borla!
I finally got fed-up with the wimpy sound of my Borla cat-back. I took the advice of several other posters: I drove into a muffler shop 400 miles from home and had them EXTRACT the Borla muffler and button it up with a corresponding 3" straight pipe. INCREDIBLE! Deep, deep, deep and subliminally bassy at idle. On throttle at 3000RPM and above, it sounds like an orchestra performer blowing intensely hard simultaneously through a multitude of French horns, like an instrument. It actually reminds me of my 1976 Kawasaki KZ-900 when I removed that baffle from the KerKer header. I experienced the same astonishment, as well as the same feeling that I was "getting away with having done something that ought not be done." I've been in close proximity to several police cruisers without incident. You have to just give it a tiny, tiny bit of throttle. In an elevated gear at a low RPM, however, too much throttle evokes an overtone which sounds like wasting water rushing down a channel. I cannot believe that I acquired this sound. I was so happy that I let the mechanic who cut out the Borla muffler keep it.
