I am getting ready to install a set of Borla Headers/Y-pipe on my 01 F250 SD V10 with 110k miles on it. I have been looking for a muffler and was consideriing the Aero turbine but Skipper maintains that this is a pretty loud unit. It sounds good on the soundclip but I am reconsidering.
Since I have Borla headers I thought I would look into a Borla muffler. I am uninterested in the Borla catback system primarily because of the cost factor (I obtained the headers/y-pipe for the unbelievable price of $240 complete with shipping and everything - the headers are new and the y-pipe is in superb shape). Besides the stock 3" piping is more than adequate.
Borla does not make an ordinary muffler with 3" openings on both sides which is what the stock muffler has. They do make the Borla XR-1 racing muffler and advertise that it works with trucks also. As a racing muffler though is this advisable for the V10? Ordinary Borla mufflers that come with the cat-back systems seem to not give much more noise than the stock system; maybe a bit better. If I go with the XR-1 will the noise be too much like the Aero?
Anyone have any experience with the XR-1? Appreciate your input. Thanks
Thanks TM, your post did not help me decide on which muffler but it absolutely verified my decision to go with headers/y-pipe; you can really hear the exhaust open up with headers as opposed to when just the stock manifold is being used. WOW!!!
It might not make much of a real difference then which muffler to use so long as it is a high flow model. Still waiting for anyone who has had any experience with the XR-1.
sorry i couldn't help on the muffler............i'm trying to find a clip of the aero turbine on a V10, i know somone posted it up some where. it might not have been here, but it was on a ford web site........i'll keep looking! maybe somone will pop in with it before i get to it!
I had the Borla headers and cat-back on my 1999. You're right that the Borla Cat-back isn't much louder than stock. If you want loud then look into a Magnaflow or Flowmaster 40. For mellow I like my Dynomax Superturbo that I put on my 05.
