I HAVE A 2001 EXCURSION v10 WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYBODY OUT THERE HAS CHANGED THIER MUFFLER YET WANT TO KNOW WHICH IS THE BEST ie BORLA, FLOWMASTER, GIBBSON OR ANY OTHER BRAND WANTING A NICE DEEP SOUND.
I've got a similar question, but I'm looking to improve mpg and would prefer to keep it relatively quiet. I'm getting a K&N kit and figure that I've got to improve flow going out to maximize the benefit of airflow in, so I'm looking for mufflers. I'd like to do this without freaking my wife out with a loud exhaust note. Any suggestions?
yeah that to don't want to freak out the wife I already did once when i came home with the Excursion ( haha ). Hey let me know how the K & N works out for you.
I installed a Banks system. Although I have the complete system, i.e. headers, etc., the sound is not much louder than stock. I have heard many bowties with much louder notes! I can't tell you how much of an increase in power the Banks stuff made because I did a bunch of other stuff at the same time. By the way, my wife does hear me coming!
I'm about to move up from a Ranger to a 2000 Excursion Limited with the V10. I to would like to improve the gas mileage but I think the possibilities are very limited because trucks this big are not required to meet the same emissions standards as F150s so they already have fewer cats and more free flowing exhaust. Have you seen the diameter of the exhaust system on the V10s?
Any way I have located a set of shorty headers from BORLA ($800.00 "choke") but I did not find a S.S. cat back system on the market yet. Any ideas?
You know of you go back to borla web page and after you get the the header page click on options exhaust system their for about 740.00 plus your headers. $$$$$
I was told to install gibson's mufflers so i have been looking into that right now my
If you want improved mileage get a PSD I can't get mine below 14 MPG around town, (pushing it fairly hard) It is new this week so I don't know what it will do on a long trip or after it is broken in. figure that will take about a year or 20,000 miles at least.
Your question is tantamount in my mind; and, after having played the roulette game and chosen BORLA, I seek another choice to take a chance with. The catback Borla on my V-10 took my gas mileage from 12.4 mpg to 12.5 mpg. Whoopdie-Doo. When I place the Borla "K&N look-alike" air filter in play, the gas mileage goes back down to 12.4 mpg. Sound: There is a gurgle which is nice, but I must confess that it does NOT render the sound which I had aspired it might. The only thing that is noteworthy is the [what I term] "backpressure decrescendo" as the tachometer decreasingly transcends the 1800 RPM through 1500 RPM range, sounding the most resonant at 1600 RPM during a decelerating coast...But that's it, not really exciting. Yes, I'm disappointed. It just doesn't sound cool. There's no thunder, just a very subdued purr, trying to be a growl...and I must say that the engine noise coming through the front firewall masks any sound from the Borla unless the windows are open. Before I bought Borla, I was encouraged to go with Gibson, but I'll never know unless I spend more money on it. THE BEST SOUND I've ever heard, though, was on an import car which had a KONIG/Mozart exhaust. It was Boss! I tried their website and wrote them (mozartexhaust.com), but they replied that they never considered addressing our market. I too, by way of this reply, ask anyone out there to please recommend an exhaust system that sounds deep, forceful and, more pointedly, as if it is "reverberatively bouncing off the walls of some vacuous concert hall".
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Nov-01 AT 07:12 PM (EST)]I have a 2001 V10 Superduty and went with a staight pipe after the cat (no muffler) with a 3.5 in. tip. I think this sounds better than any muffler system I have heard on the V10. It is a very unique sound. I have had some people tell me it sounds kind of like a deisel, but not as lound and a little diffent tone. No one that has ridden in my truck says that it sound obnoxious, and you can really hear it when you step on it. I think you would be pleased with a setup like this.
I have a 2000 XLT 4x4 with the V-10. I have added the K&N system and put a Flowmaster 40 series muffler with 3.5 inch out. It sounds like an Indy racecar. You can hear it easily from inside the vehicle. But at highway speeds, above 5omph..it quiets down and is no problem. I do have the 4.3 ls rear-end by the way. I have a F150 5.4 I put the Gibson on. I love it....it is a single out catback system. It is very quiet, though. I have over 25,ooo miles on the F150 and it has not gotten louder. The Flowmaster only has 8,000 miles on it,,but did loosen up a bit. I bought and had it installed at Meineke for around $175, which included a solid chrome tip. My mileage with both air intake system and the exhaust, increased from 11.5 to 12.5 to 13.2, depending on whether I kept it under 70mph or went up to 80. Keep in mind, I have the 4x4 and the 4.3ls,,so I tack over 2.6 at 70mph. Hope this helps...Richard
Hey thanks richard this is great info. by any chance how do you think the gibson's would sound on the excursion
i also have 4:30 gears on my 2001 limited.
I have the K&N Gen 2 filter and Gibson cat-back on my V10. The Gibson was fairly easy to install. I use the Excur to pull an enclosed trailer, and it pulls stronger and faster w the upgrades. I have not chipped it yet since I was hoping to avoid running 93 octane.
Sorry it has taken me awhile to reply, but I think the Gibson would have sounded quieter and probably had the same effect, as the Flowmaster. If anything, I might have lost some low end torque with the Flowmaster, but there was certainly enough to go around with the
V-10 and 4.3 rearend. So, I would probably suggest the Gibson if you do not want noise you can hear inside, but if you want others to hear you coming, within reason, go for the Flowmaster. After all said and done, the Flowmaster system may have been twenty or thirty cheaper, after installation, then the Gibson. The exhaust system past the Flowmaster is the Meinecke pipe,,,I am assumeing the Gibson would be a little thicker and last longer, but this is strictly a guess. Hope this helps. Richard
