There is no downside, or performance penalty caused by a PCV valve. All it does is allow the engine to burn any blow by vapors as opposed to dumping this raw oil vapor into the atmosphere.
In fact, the PCV system decreases the contaminants in the oil, allowing the oil to stay cleaner and last longer.

It doesn't hurt anything.
Forgetting my bad joke about the environment, a properly operating PVC system will reduce contaminants in the oil as Doc says and will not hurt performance.
I run the evacuation system because my motots are strictly off-road and run 20 hours per year.
i had the same thing happen in my 400 and it turned out to be the oil rings were installed wrong on 3 cylinders(by a buddy who was supposed to know what he was doing) and was blowing back up into the intake. it wasnt even burning that much oil, but when i tore the engine apart again thats what i found. after fixing the rings properly and putting it back together it was fine. no more burning oil and no more sludge.
