5.8L advice on installation

Cheers to all,

I have a hot-rod project for which I am planning to use a 5.8L engine, C6 tranny and 8.8 3.27 rear end. I already have the engine, tranny, rear end and the intended recipient -- a '56 Dodge 1/2 ton P/U. My questions are: the 5.8 engine is fuel injected (taken from a '89 E-150) which I would like to convert to MAF. Which computer should I use? Another option is to convert it to a carburetor -- any suggestions? The project truck would be used for street use only and, occasionally, towing light loads. My goal is for good reliability, power and economy. I realize the 5.8 is not known for good economy, but I would like to get the best possible.

Thanks!
Norman C

The biggest benefit of a MAF conversion is the motor's adapability to performance parts. If you're going with a relatively stock build you don't need mass air. Make SURE you need to convert to mass air before you do it, as it's a considerable amount of work to do it.

+1, it not absolutely necessary unless you swap on some heads and install a bigger cam. The long runner EFI intake will deliver more low rpm TQ than a carb could so it's worth keeping for that alone. If you are going down that road a 5.0 mustang ECU is what you want, it's tuned for performance and compatable with a selection of tuners. The Ford kit I have uses a Stang computer and it ran a 5.8 with a cam no problem at all.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Your comments are appreciated and, since I am not planning on any major modifications to my engine, other than cleaning up the ports and adding some suitable headers, there is really nothing major to consider.

Cheers,
Norman C

Good luck with the swap! Sounds like a good set up.

You might want to concider running a new engine harness (like from painless or something) Instead of having an old retrofitted harness in your pretty rod.
