I just recently bought a 1991 F150 XLT Lariat,4 Wheel drive, 5.0, M5OD. The speedometer does not work. First thought was the speedometer pinion gear in the Transfer case, replaced it, nothing. What else could be the problem? Thanks in advance!
The older mechanical speedos like you have are so simple that there's really nothing else it could be, unless for some reason the speedo gear is not turning the cable in the transfer case, but I'm not sure how you would check that.
I'm having the same problems and am at a loss. The only thing i haven't changed is the pinion gear in my transfer case or my speedometer cluster in the dash.
How hard is it?
I'm guessing:
-take out the drive shaft
-remove the rear "cover part" off the transfer case
-remove pinion gear from output shaft
...piece of cake?
tell me what you can
thanks

None of that. On the driver side of the truck on the top of the transfer case there is a cable that is held down by a nut that goes into the transfer case. Its a 7/16" nut I believe. Take off the nut and pull the cable out. When you pull the cable out, there will be a yellow plastic gear at the end. That is the gear you need to change.
As far as changing the speedometer pinion gear, it's incredably easy. david00f150 is right about the process, although you will want to take the gear off before you buy a new one. Mine was not yellow it was black with 20 teeth. There are different ones and you will need to know the color and the # of teeth.
I found out the problem on mine. I need to get a new speedo cable. A buddy of mine hooked his drill to the transfer case end and started turning it. I looked at the other end and nothing was turning. Cable is broken somewhere in the middle. All of the parts store in town keep trying to tell me that I must have a 4 speed automatic tranny when io have the M5OD. Why they think this I do not know, I even went as far as taking one of the clerks out to my truck and showing him the gear shift. I called the Ford stealership and they have yet to get back to me on how long it will take to get it in.
Napa used to have a universal kit that wasn't to bad that you just take the pieces of the old one , match the length, cut it, slip the new end on it and smack the included crimping tool and it's done. Just make sure you match the prefited square end to one end.
Alright guys, i've done ALL that....2 months ago. I changed the cable, hooked it up to my drill, all worked fine from the cable up. I changed the gear on the end of the speedo/cruise control sensor, and i even spent $30 on a new speedo/cruise control sensor unit....still no change......it jitters around pretty bad for a little while... or it drops of to 0 mph or shoots way past 85. I've done everything from the plastic gear forward. And so my thinking now, is that its the gear inside my transfer case. I've looked at my All-Data descriptions, and it looks like a real monster to get to...but at the same time, it might be a cake walk.
