A picture of the older style plate:

And the newer style plate:

Here's the Rating Plate decipher page from the 48-52 Ford Truck Chassis Parts Catalogue:

Look in my gallery 3 for the full size version.
Best,
Julie!
i´m not sure, becauce i dont find the "R" for the engine code. There iss only "D" and "E". And also the "1" for the models year....

@Julies,
if i look in your gallery i can´t see a larger version...It´s the same small size
i try to identify a vin of a 51 pickup but i cant. How can help me?? The vin is F1R1SP1XXXX but the vin decoder on the page from lmc cant help me

F1 = F1
R = 239 V8
1 = 1951
SP = Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) Assembly Plant
1XXXX = Numerical Sequence of Assembly.
Decoded from the: 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / General Info Section, Pages X & X1.
But unfortunately FTE made the page I posted above too small. I sent him an e-mail because he has too few posts to PM. Plus he's an overseas member - so I thought I'd send him the big copy I have. Simple things made challenging!
J!
thanks a lot for your mail
But now i have the next problem... The VIN on the firewall is different from the VIN on the plate
Maybe somebody change the cabin
This car make me crazy

According to the 51 Ford Truck Operators Manual, there are three places the Truck Serial number is "affixed:" 1) the "Rating Plate" attached to the dispatch box [glove compartment] door; the "Patent Data Plate" affixed to the right [passenger] side of the engine compartment firewall; and, stamped on the upper right frame adjacent to the brake line retainer and shock mount.
(We have seen them on the left side as well - especially on Canadian built trucks)
The glove box doors were easy to swap out, and many did so to install the doors out of the Five Star Extra Cabs where the door had a lock. The rating plates usually went with these swaps, so I would venture to say that that is what got swapped out not the cab.
If you are looking for the "real" and "actual" serial number of the truck, the only one that is perminent is stamped into the frame. I would use that one for any title work or registration you need to do.
Good luck,
Julie
OBTW!!!!!! Sometimes, especially with the earlier 51 trucks, the new numbering system was used on the glove box plates and the old used on the firewall plates. Mine was just that way. So you may have F1R1SP11234 on the glove box plate, it is entirely possible that the firewall plate says: 1RC-SP-11234.
Here is a picture of both of mine:

Both plates are reproductions, and I have changed some of the data on the Rating Plate to reflect current equipment. But the serial numbers on each were not changed.
See the four screws on the glove box door in the lower picture? All you had to do to remove that door, and thus the rating plate, was remove those four screws!!!! Also, note the lock associated with the Five Star Extra Cab Series.
I have heard the plates are available from mid fifties. But you need to send them a certified copy of the serial number or some such faddle and they only put stock data on the plates.
There is a guy who does the older style at: Tags Backeast, Trim Tags Backeast, Data Plates, A.G.Backeast. We make tags for AMC, Buick, Cadillac, Camaro, Chevelle, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Corvette, Dodge, DeSoto, Edsel, Ford, Frazer, La Salle, Henry J, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury, Mustang, Oldsmobile but is not tooled to do the newer style.
(OK so this you have already researched and found out).
I know a man here in San Diego who will make AND emboss the plates from scratch-you provide the info. He says 3 weeks, takes 3months. Write me a PM and I will be glad to give you his contact info.
Julie
PS edit note: You don't have enough posts to send PMs yet - just send me a regular e-mail.
the number on the cabine iss absolute different. The number is ASP143427 88
The number on the plate on the glove box door is the same like the VIN at the titel.... So i hope i dont get problems to send the car to germany
