I need help in dianoging a problem. My truck will start and run fine for about 2-3 minutes and then dies, no codes. I don't know wether the problem the week earlier had anything to do with it, but one morning it was 1 degree F and my truck was running bad, top speed was about 30mph. I was almost out of fuel.I made it to the fuel station and filled up with warm fuel. Truck starting to run fine. Then two days latter as I was driving home it died, just like you had turned the key off. No code, nothing unusal. Check all the fuses and all OK. Tried to start again and it started. Drove about 1 mile and it died again.
Next day I stared it and it ran fine for about 5 minutes and died. I replaced the fuel filter, because I thought maybe something happened to it when the fuel geled up that cold morning. Started fine and died after about 2 minutes, I quickly turn off the key when the truck died and opened the drain valve on the filter bowl, and fuel came out. It acts like it's getting fuel, at least to the filter bowl, but after that I'm not sure. How is the fuel system layout? Is there a small pump in the tank that feeds the main pump on the frame? Then does it go to the filter? And then where? What do I need to do next?
If it truely does seeme like someone turned the key off on you I would suspect your cam position sensor. More people will be ringing in here shortly if I haven't allready been beat.
What are you using to determine there are no codes? Does the check engine light come on or stay on? Any other dash lights not acting normally? Shutting off like someone turned the key off, usually means something electrical. CPS, chaffed wires touching the drivers side valve cover, etc.
But FORD wouldn't paid for the part. Said it had to be installed by a tech. So I had to buy one from Advance Auto Parts for $30.00 and put it in myself. Wonder if I contacted FORD, if they would reimburse me?
Just a word of warning. The CPS from the auto parts stores have an even worse reputation than the Ford CPS. Don't be terribly surprised if this one goes out soon. The CPS should be around $25 from Ford now. I would pick up a spare from them and carry around a 10 mm socket and a screwdriver in case the need to change it again comes up.
Did you happen to put any anti-sieze on the bolt holding the CPS in? Makes it easier to get out the next time.
Get to International Harvester and buy the black CPS, toss it in and use the $30 one as a "spare". Trust us on this one MP....
If you are lucky to get one, word has it there is no more black one.
Not even DP Tuner has them listed on thier website anymore.
It is all grey ones now.
Yikes!
Geez, so now what the heck are we supposed to do when the lot of gray ones go mass bad? I did a search on eBay and found the black ones for pre-97 and gray for after.
Hopefully Ford will be "fixing" this (again).
