Has anyone tried threading the holes for the drain valve to 1/8 npt and installing a petcock or other valve in lower hole and plugging the top hole?
I think it would be an easy fix, but the only problem I have is the holes in housing. Didnt pay attention when filter housing was off if the holes have inserts in them, or if the holes are just cast with the little raised sections. If it is just aluminum, it would be a good way to go, but if the raised section around the holes are inserts, it may be a PITA if inserts move or come out.
If someone has an old housing laying around, could you look at it and let me know? I would appreciate it.
I cant wait for them to come in if I order them and they are $45 from a local dealer. I have also looked at a bunch of places for orings that will work and cant find any. I just figured it would be a good, permanent fix for the orings that will likely fail again at some point in the near future. I dont want to have to replace them every couple of years, or have my valve crack from removing and replacing the orings so often.

Sounds good, take some pics and let us know how it goes.
What Pat said. Guzzle's ships out via Priority Mail and has a couple other things you may or may not want to pick up. Priority Mail is 2-3 days nationwide service which if you order today, ASAP, you just might get them by Saturday's mail, depending on where you live.
EDIT: I see in your profile that you're in AZ. Get to ordering them ASAP and you can definitely have them in time for the weekend. Guzzle (Bob) is fast at getting them shipped. I just ordered from him last week, paid in the morning, and it was shipped out the same day. Welllll.... what are ya waitin' fer??? LOL

It is probably going to be pretty hard to find a small valve that would be fuel rated for diesel. Most valves use plain old rubber or Buna (not Buna-N) for seals. These would rapidly disenagrate with exposure to diesel and begin to leak within weeks. Some valves that are rated for WOG (Water, Oil, Gas) use teflon seats which is another compound that will not withstand the oxidation of diesel fuel.
I don't think that I would risk destroying a $300+ fuel bowl when there is the option of a quick and inexpensive fix by simply replacing the o-rings.
The Buna-N o-rings that are on the factory valves have lasted quite a while prior to the introduction of ULSD, Viton o-rings will most likely outlast the life of your truck.
Thanks, Guzzle and Pop... I just ordered my set of mil-spec o-rings to have on hand.
I know that I have a small leak right now because I've seen slight evidence of it under the truck in the driveway when it rains (that wonderful rainbow shimmer on the wet concrete surface)... not yet sure what it is that is leaking, but will be digging into it this weekend in the "shiver-me-timbers" weather. Shortly after I saw the wet rainbow, my terp belt started whining a little bit.
If it ends up NOT being the drain valve, I'll have the o-rings on hand for either a pre-emptive maneuver in my spare time or an eventually necessary replacement... whichever comes first.
EDIT: Guzzle is one heck of a great guy to deal with! In fact, I would be glad - VERY glad - to pay more for parts from Guzzle just to have the privelege of dealing with him!
You can find Viton (or buna-n) at an industrial supply (gaskets, o-rings, even a marine supply store since there are a lot of marine diesels out there). The o-ring size is -202. Shouldn't cost more than 30 cents for a couple of nitrile (buna-n) or 75 cents for a couple of Viton.
And hopefully the guy at the counter knows the difference between Buna, Buna-N, Viton and Peanut Butter!
In years past, I can tell you that I have had at least two counter clerks tell me when I pressed them for answers to the compound; "It doesn't matter. They're all the same, IT'S RUBBER, this is what we sell for everything and they work".
