I have a 2005 supercrew- been through all the problems with the 5.4......fuel injector sticking open.......cam phasor issue since birth.....now motor is throwing a permanent code P0012 for the cam issue. down on power and also getting a p0303 code at times. I changed the plug, coil pack on cylinder 3. Still weak and idling rough and still got the codes. It has 187,000 miles on it. I am trying to decide if I need to try new cam phasors, reman engine, or my real question here is....Up to what year newer than 2005 can I get a 5.4 junkyard motor that will not have these issues and will easily change out? Any input will be greatly appreciated.
I read on either this forum or another forum that the 5.4s made from 2004 up to a certain point in 2008 are all the same. Late model year 2008 and up are the newer design. They can be swapped into the older trucks, but it is more difficult.
It's possible the tone ring on the phaser has spun tricking the PCM that the cam timing is off. The tone ring has 3 fingers on one side and 2 on the other, the middle finger has to line up with the "L" timing mark for it to be right.
Ok- changed out the VCT solenoids- that code seems to be good- now getting a 351 & 353 code and rough idle and low power- i unplug cylinder 3 and makes no difference- it has a new plug and a new coil-- BTW- i do have a significant exnaust leak where I had to change converter when the famous fuel injector stuck open- been 50k since that happened-Napa convertor and y pipe- just crappy connectors- could this cause the misfire on cylinder 3
ok - read codes - reset codes- unhooked battery- put leads together for 1 minute- let it set for about 30 minutes- ran again- pulled into drive with brake on- accelerated-- now P0012 and p0021- waiting on some help- changed both VCT solenoids tonight- motor sounds better- still no power at take off and initial codes were 353 and 351- now p0012 and p0021 retarded timing= help me! VCT solenoids were supposed to clear p0012 and p0021
Pull the valve covers and check the phaser tone rings like I said. If the rings are good then either the engine is out of time or the phaser is physically stuck. The p035x codes are coil circuit codes meaning either the connector is not fully seated or there is a broken wire somewhere in the harness.
If i am going to pull valve covers- should i go ahead and pull the front of the motor and change the cam phasers while i am at it? Hate to do it twice!
