I have a 92 F150 w/E4OD 5.0l that I'm dropping a built 5.8l in and converting over to a MAF system.
I already have the WAY1 EEC unit and I have the engine wiring harness from a 96 F150 that I plan on using to either pull wires from to modify my existing harness, or if it matches my current harness where it plugs in at the square plug next to the power box under the hood.
So my question is does anyone know if the wires from the 96 harness is laid out the same as the 92 at the square plug next to the power box?
I have wiring diagrams from www.fordfuelinjection.com and all the diagrams I can find only mention the 60 pin plug at the EEC unit.
WAY1 is a 95 5.0 E4OD computer, not OBD-II. I couldn't say how similar the 95 wiring is to the 92, but I would imagine it is pretty similar. The best way to find out would be to sit down with a wiring diagram for each and look for any differences.
Let me clarify something for better understanding; After research I learned that in 96 Ford went with a OBD-II as stated, so with that said I also found that in 95 Ford did make limited amounts of MAF F150/Broncos, knowing they are OBD-I I figured I could get the 96 harness just for the wires so I would not have to fabricate them and just swap them into the correct location on the 60 pin plug.
But now as I look closer at the truck, the engine harness doesn't go directly into the 60 pin plug but rather to a square black plug on the engine side of the power distribution box under the hood, this would mean more than just a swap.
I imagine that some of the wires go into the power distribution box and meet up with some of the other wires that go into the 60 pin plug located in the lower left (Driver Side) corner of the firewall next to the fender well.
First am I correct on this assumption?
Then my next question is, is the 96 harness power distribution box plug compatible with the 92 at the same location, another way of asking: Do I need to make wiring changes there as well?
As I look at the Square Black Plugs (located @ power distribution box) they look identical to me! But hey I'm getting old, blind and slow minded...
Also, is the ECM located on the drivers side kick panel next to the hood release?
That's what I thought. Your swap isn't going to be as easy as removing 1 harness section and pluging in another. The wiring for the sequential injectors and MAF meter do not exist on your truck all the way back to the computer so you will have to add these, whether you go through the harness connector block or not is your choice, but I suspect it would be easier to just bypass it.
The ECM is in the drivers side kick panel, but is accessed from the engine bay side on your truck.
Thanks, I downloaded a wiring book online today and after I compared a MAF version to a MFI version I started to think it would be better to by pass the harness connector block as well, so you just confirmed that for me.
That leads to another question than, what about the alternator wiring, what would you suggest (I will look in this wiring book as well to see what I can figure out)?
I'm pretty good with auto wiring and schematics, I have done complete custom vehicle wiring on newer jeeps for newer v8 engine swaps, I just view the extra work as a pain in the back side. lol
Guess I'll look for a spare 60 pin connector and get started on a new custom harness, I guess I can leave the current harness connector block where it is when I make the change, it shouldn't hurt anything, than again it may be better to remove what I don't need, what's your opinion Conanski?
I say leave everything as it is and add what you need, the only exception would be the SD injector wiring since these pins get reused for the sequential wiring, and having 2 complete sets of injector plugs on the motor will be a bit cluttered.
ok dont jump on my back if I repeat something that has allready been stated. I have one of each trucks. The MAF wiring does not go through the square black plug on the inner fender (42 pin I believe). If you pick up an ECM(104 pin)and a complete engine bay harness from a 96 5.8 F-150 you will not need your WAY1 EEC. Its all in the ECM. This means changing your 60 pin engine bay wiring and engine wiring. But that isn't all. You'll need the harmonic balancer and missfire sensor off of that 96 5.8 along with the engine wiring that you allready have.
Well this 96 MAF (Injector & Sensor Harness) does go through the Black Square Plug (40 Pin?), that's how I received it from a bone yard!
There are so many configurations out there who knows what all Ford has floating around.
Right now I'm looking for a 95 Harness from the Black Square Connector (40 Pin) to the 60 Pin PCM Connector, that way all I will have to do is spice or re-pin a couple of power wires / fuel rely that run from the Power Distro Box to the 60 Pin as well. If not I'll make some custom harness with only what I need.
If anyone know of a 95 with the aforementioned harness let me know, that will save me calls to bone yards explaining what I need.
ok I was misunderstood. The MAF plug and IAT sensor are not on and do not go thruogh the 40 pin black plug. I agree that you should buy the 96 harness from the said 40 pin back to the 104 pin ECM but this harness is the whole engine bay harness. No splicing required and you'll have OBD II.
Well I don't want to go with the 104 pin ECU, I want to stay with the 60 pin OBD-I ECU so I need one from a 95.
All the engine sensors on my engine harness go through the 40 pin connector including both the MASS- Air and the IAT Sensors.
The harnesses from both SD and MAF are almost identical, the 95 / 96 MAF does not have a BARO / MAP sensor they also have two HEGO sensors vs. one for the SD setup, other than the Mass-Air Sensor and the Injectors all the other sensor are basically the same with the exception of the connectors being different as well as the locations.
