hi iam new to this so i would like your help determing the correct size electric fan for my truck. i have a 87 f150 xlt lariat 4x4 lwb with a bored .040 over 351w h.o. it has a 4180 holley carb and a towing cam w/ auto trans and a/c. it still has original radiator and water pump. any help w/ size, brand, and places with best price/ service would be greatly appreciated. oh i live in tennessee if that matters
First off, why not use the original clutch fan? It should be fine with a mild 351 as long as you have a decent radiator. No fans in the world will cool it if the radiator is marginal condition. If it's just running hot, then I'd pull the radiator and have it checked. If it just needs cleaned, have it done. Might be too plugged from sediment and need replaced.
Just my thoughs with what I know of the situation.
sorry i did mention that before the truck isnt overheating at all. i was just looking to upgrade/ maybe get a little more power. the only real problem im having is not getting fuel to carb has a new pump dual tank switch works and has gas in it. but thanks for the input always something to consider.
With a clutch fan, it doesn't really draw power unless the truck gets warm(needs it). Better then a direct drive fan on older trucks. Personally I don't see it as enough change to warrant the price of electric fans and the related equipment to make then work.
Have you seen the pickups in the tanks? Make sure they aren't clogged shut. Check any of the rubber hoses and replace them. They have a tendency to swell shut or have a rubber flapper piece break loose which will cause it to not draw fuel.
This has been discussed alot on this forum. Many people have used the dual electric fans from a ford taurus or van with success. They are fairly cheap and easy to get at a salvage yard and seem to have plenty of power to cool off truck engines. Use the search button on this forum to find out more info as its been discussed alot on this site.
good luck
