Deisel sound on start up

What is this? When I turn my ignition key everthing sounds fine, but when I release the key after the engine starts, there is a deisel type sound. Not all the time, but often enough to make me curious. I am sure I have seen a thread on this subject in the past but I cant find a search engine for this site! It happens it seems randomly, and it happens year round. Does this happen to anybody else?

I have it happen very frequently. I was told to use the Ford Filter because of some anti siphon blah blah blah... hate to say it, but i have used the Ford oil and Filters since day one. I believe another person said it was cam phasers? I am not too sure what to think?

I would like to have an answer. It happens most times after the truck has been driven and warmed up and shut down for 15-60 minutes.

Well the noise is combination of a few things. All newer 3-valve 5.4s have noisy injectors that you can here while the engine is running. The cam phasers are notorious for there poor design and eventually becoming very noisy. Also the start up rattle is normally atributed to all the oil flowing back to the oil pan when you shut it off. They say that using the motorcraft filter will keep this from happening. I dont know. My truck rattles from start up to the time I shut it off.

Sounds like maybe your lash adjusters are going bad.

I've had a similar 'rattling' noise and I traced it down to....me.

If I twist the key, but let go too early before the engine fires, I have to turn key off and repeat. When I do, the noise occurs as it starts. I think it's because my failed start attempt has dumped fuel into the chambers.

Quick re-starts is the only time I've had this happen. I'm more careful now. Brian

I think my 2005 5.4L has the ticking fuel injectors. Sounds like a diesel all the time, hot or cold. It seems to vary with RPM, but it is hard to tell by myself. I can't hear it inside the cab hardly at all, but it is very noticeable when outside. What's the standard procedure on this deal? Should I take it in, or is this normal? It bugs the crap out of me, especially since it only has 27,000 miles.
