03 Excursion deisel engine sat for 8 months, now wont start
I have inherited a 2003 Ford Excursion diesel engine from my father when he passed. It has been sitting unran since the end of May 2010. When I try to start the vehicle nothing happens. A tow truck has tried jumping it and that didnt work either. The truck ran perfect up until my dad passed. He kept it in very good condition and up to date on all of the maintenance. I know nothing about cars, but would appreciate any help you can offer. I need to get it running so that I can sell it. Please HELP!!!
I was gonna be sassy and tell ya to just give it to me - but the story stopped me... Considering most of us here probably qualify as 'obsessive Excursion owners', we can understand what it means that your Dad took good care of his truck. It will certainly make someone a nice vehicle ('03 7.3 Limited 4x4 would be a sweeeeeeet Excursion!!!).
If the batteries aren't capable of maintaining 10.5 volts WHILE CRANKING, the engine will not start. Most likely your problem is weak batteries (replace BOTH). The engine can turn over 'well' and never start - one dead batt or even just a couple of dead cells can cause this (thats why 'jumpstart' didn't work).
Otherwise, just check all the fluids (especially oil level) and be sure to drain the fuel filter (water drain) after the first time it runs. Any condensation that has formed in the fuel tank will rapidly end up in the filter housing.
Please keep us posted - we can help ya get in going!
Also - NEVER let anyone talk you into using ANY kind of starting fluid. It only takes ONE TIME to destroy a perfectly good engine.

Agree, got to have 10.5v minimum during cranking to start. The 7.3 is darn near bullet proof, you've come into a really great vehicle. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. And, when in need, you have found the brain trust in FTE for any questions you have about the Ex. Keep us posted.
Guys, it could be a 6.0L too. It's a 2003, both engines were available in '03.
Sweetness, figure out which engine you have, then post in the appropriate engine forum because the engines are different and will have different thing you need to check in order to get it running.
Where are you located, how many miles on it, what color is it, how much are you asking for it?
I am located in Central CA. I think there are 180,000 plus or minus I'm not real sure. Its blue, all cloth interior, 6 disk cd changer and a dvd player. It has also been slightly lowered. My dad put on every bell & whistle except the tow package. I'm hoping to get $12,000 but will come down some. Does that sound like a good asking price or am I asking too much? I'm pretty sure its a Limited as well.
It depends on what engine you have in there. Lift open the hood. If it says Powerstroke V8 in red letters, then you have the 6.0L. If you have a solid dark gray plastic with powerstroke all in the same gray color, then you have the 7.3 which is what is sought for.

Well, it doesn't sound like a Limited or 4wd - but if its clean thats probably a good asking price for the left coast. A 7.3 will be more desirable than a 6.0 (the newer diesel engine) unless a bunch of modifications have already been made to the 6.0.
Post some pics of it or a link to your for sale ad if ya get a chance! (and if the new owners are cool - don't forget to tell them about FTE! )
