My Ranger started shaking in overdrive for the past few weeks... Anyone have any idea why this is happening?? The truck runs fine and drives great, but the shaking when its in overdrive about 55-70 mph is getting worse.
When in OD at those speeds the torque converter lockup is engaged. When tc lockup in engaged, the transmission has no slippage so you feel more feedback from the engine. The bucking/shaking in od is a very common problem on rangers and is usually remedied by a good old fashioned tuneup. A miss in the engine can and will cause those symptoms.
I concur. If the engine is not properly tuned, transmission performance can also suffer, and some bucking in OD can be indicative of that.
Another thing is transmission fluid. How old is the current ATF? If it's been more than 30K since a full flush and fill, then you should definitely have it done. Make sure Mercon V fluid is used.
Yup, sounds like time for a tune up and full trans. service including the fluid in torque converter.
I've replaced the plugs, wires about 3000 miles ago... Also, i have heard that tranny "flushing" is bad for older trans. Stories like.... My buddy's F250. He took it to a tranny shop and had it flushed because all it had a noticiable slip in each gear. Had it flushed and new fluid, then all he had was reverse!!! Scary thought of having a flush done.

I have heard these stories as well, but in my experience and everyone I know no one has had one of these horror stories. You can have the service without the flush. I think its money well spent in maint.
If you're not comfortable having the tranny flushed, then at least drop the pan and change the filter. This will replenish the old fluid with 4-6 quarts of new stuff.

I think ill do this. Maybe ill throw down the money for a flush... Idk yet though.
My 1990 F-150 had this issue, I tried everything and nothing seemed to help it. Turned out to be a motor mount that would allow the motor to shake, when it was working to push the truck in OD. Mine was more severe in low speed ranges and the OD had to be turned off going uphill. It started off just a little bit like yours and it got worse quickly. Just thought I'd throw that in there as something to look at if the tune up doesn't help.
