Is it normal to here a winding noise in 4X4 high on deceleration and no noise in 2 wheel drive brand new F350 DWR. I has a 2000 F250 but never heard it before
I am having the same problem with my 2008 F-350. I have had it in to the shop a couple of times over the noise. All they would do is tell me that it was common to the modle year. Lats month it got louder. I took it bak in to ford and they ended up replacing the front drive shaft. it was quite for a few weeks but the noise is back now.
i had the same problem on my f-250 my truck is a little older 97 but the front axle had a whine when my hubs where locked eneded up being my spyder gear back lash had that fixed and it works good now
See, the front wheels usually have slightly more tread on them, which means in 4x4 you are pulliing the rear wheels with the fronts.
So, the rear end is riding on the BACKSIDE of the ring gear and pinion which hardly gets any wear and never breaks in. It's only loaded in reverse, and never sees any real loads.
Worse, the front ring and pinion hardly get any break-in neither, and they can also be noisy.
With my '01 SD, I got the exact same thing. Nothing wrong with it.
I changed my rear diff fluid once to Royal Purple. It made the noise MUCH less noticable. Then because it leaked, I changed it again, but this time to Mobil 1.
Go figure, the noise is GONE now.
Of course, if it's really loud, something is wrong, but if you get a slight whining sound, it's not really a concern.
thank you very much for your replies i will kepp and ear on it. Prob have dealer take a look but i know they all say "normal" just liked to hear some feed back from other ford owners.
