The headers on my 68 are covered in a light surface rust. What would be a good paint/coating that would keep them looking nice? Ceramic coating is probably out of my league. Anyone use anything that they would recommend?
I've had pretty good luck using flat black high-temp header paint from someone like dupli-color or simular brand. A couple of tips is to completely clean the header.
Sand blast if you can but otherwise wire brush then after the rust is gone, clean with acetone.
Apply several coats allowing each coat to dry at least 1 hour or more.
After you have several coats, install the headers and run the engine for a just until the headers start to heat up, about 20 sec or so. then shut off the engine and walk away for about 10 min. repeat this process until you get NO smoke from the headers once they are at running temp. Probably 5~10 times should do it, this allows the paint to cure simular to baking the header but not quite as good.
If you just run the engine, I've found the paint will just peal right off. or not last very long.
You'll need paint in the 1200+ range, but most parts stores have them. I select black because you don't see the dirt marks as quick.
