any body know what the rpm shift points are on the 5 speed manual 4.9 i just put a tach in and it seems like its reading low 2000 rpms on the tach sounds like 5000 in the cab
It's supposed to sound like that (like a "moaning" six--that means it's happy--LOL). That's assuming you don't have the fan clutch issue Conanski mentioned.
What is your rear axle ratio? My '88 F-150 2x4 4.9 has 3.55 rear gears in it, and I shift at 2,500 if I'm actually accelerating into traffic with some vigor. If I'm just coasting along in town, I may shift it at 2,000 or less. That's if there's no real load on it, that is.
If you're shifting at 2,000 rpm, then your an even more-conservative driver than me, and I thought I was bad! LOL My father had a construction company for years, and he ingrained in me this thing about not needlessly revving stuff. Although I like to "get on" a car now and then, I find myself not revving truck engines, especially a "long stroke" torque-monster such as the 4.9.
Check to see if your fan clutch is siezed, that'll make it sound like a turboprop at takeoff.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but... How is an easy way to see if the fan clutch is seized? my buddy thinks mine could be but i dont want to go replacing it if i dont have to. Are you supossed to be able to just spin the fan with your hand when the motor is off? thanks again and sorry for

The clutch on the fan should spin with the engine off. It should not spin too freely, though, it should have a slight drag on it as you spin it with your hand.
That sounds about normal for the big six. I usually shifted between 2000 and 2500 rpms, and yes it sounds like it's spinning a lot faster, just the nature of the beast I guess. Spin it up to 3500 or 4000 one time if you really want to hear it sound like it's gonna explode, sounds awesome with a 3 inch open exhaust though

Every once in a while I'll take mine to 4,000. Sounds pretty whicked. It also sounds like it's going to explode when I do this.I can get mine to shift under 2,000 in 1st and 2nd speed. This is with a 4.11 gear ratio. I love the way a 300 doesn't have to rev real high to get a 4,000 lb brick moving.
I usually shift at 1800-2000 empty, and if I get on it I out-accelerate most traffic. Towing I shift at 2500-3000 depending on how heavy the load is. By my '91 dies out right at 3000 when my '90 will pull well past that.
