well, for about 3 days now I've noticed that if you're downshifting from 3rd to 2nd the gears will grind.....sometimes. it doesn't happen everytime. it just grinds a little bit (a second or two), but then eventually goes into gear, but not today. this morning I was downshifting and it wouldn't go into gear for anything. I slowed it down to where I could go into 1st and then gain speed again. NOTE: if you're going from 1st to 2nd it doesn't grind.....only from 3rd down to 2nd. after that one time this morning it didn't happen again.
what could be wrong? dad said it's probably low on transmission fluid. that being said I don't know when the transmission fluid was changed. we bought it almost 2 years ago and we never changed it (driven 2000 miles since we've had it).
Hi Keven, just looked at your profile to see if I could figure out what
transmission you had and even found your name. :)
Something broken doesn't seem likely, or it would have been a more
sudden change and sure as heck wouldn't have fixed itself like that? ;)
Synchronizers worn enough to start really complaining -at- you?
Plus...
Cold weather and low oil all at the same time? {shrug}
Check the oil level (and add some oil;) and then we will at least have that
out of the way so omebody that actually knows something can skip over
that and get to the real problem. ;)
My T18 just -very- slowly got worse and worse, never got all the way bad,
when I got my transmission "rebuilt". The biggest waste of money I ever
spent on my pickup, that. I had to tear it all apart and re-do it anyway. :/
I paid because I wanted someone that knew what they were doing but
seems they were best at taking my money. ;)
If it comes to needing new synchronizers, seriously consider fixing yourself. :)
Hey there Dr. Dirt. Not saying the guys here can't help, (bet they can!) but try posting this over in the clutch, trans, drive train forum. I read through there pretty often just to learn some tips. They know their stuff. Good luck.
Oh yea, if they help you out, bring that knowledge back here to the dents!
magic eight ball says all signs point to bad synchros. Slight possibility clutch linkage could be wearing/in need of adjustment. However beings its only from 3 to 2 id concur and say synchro!
Reverse is a different issue, that one isn't synchronized (just the way it is). To double clutch- push in the pedal to shift into neutral, let out the pedal then push it down again to go into the next gear.
oh, now I know what you're talking about. I've never done that going down the road. I have done that before like after waiting for a train. truck doesn't exactly go into gear.....take it out, let the clutch back out, push in clutch, then put it back in gear.
i feel your pain. my f350 has a 4 speed and only goes into 2nd (when downshifting) when i just about come to a stop. sometimes its a real job to get in gear. i need to rebuild my trans but like everyone else, money is tight.
