IS IT REALLY WORTH IT???

I had my exhaust redone, with new stock cat, and a 40 series flowmaster. I have a single 3" going into the cat and into the flowmaster, after that, it comes out of the flowmaster with daul 2 1/2" straight out the back. My mechanic told me to gut the cat, cause I really want alot of sound!!! Right now it sounds muffled. Will gutting the cat make a big difference?? The cat cost me $350 installed, but if it will make a big difference, I have no problem gutting it. He told me not to worry about emissions. So folks, will it give me alot more sound, or not enouph to constitute gutting a $350 cat?? Thanks in advance for your input!!

If there is no emissions testing in your state, sure go for it. The cat muffles the sound almost as much as a muffler.

I'm to **** with money to have just spend $350 bucks on a cat installed to take it off so soon.

I don't see how you can think a 40 series on a 460 isn't loud enough!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jul-02 AT 04:23 AM (EST)] You spent $350 on a new cat? You can buy new high-flow cats for $100. Hey, want to buy my truck? I am selling the '72 for, ahem, $5000. LOL I think you should take the cat off and see if you can get your money back. Then weld in a straight pipe.

Trust me, that is the going rate around here for a cat. I called alot of places, and this guy was the cheapest. Also, my brother runs a 302, with 40 series flowmaster, and his truck is way louder than mine. He does not have a cat on it, and that's why I'm wondering if mine will be a BIG Difference if I remove it. I tell you, you folks are hard on me with the replies. I'm just asking for your help and knowledge, and I get dogged. Will it be a BIG difference?? Please let me know!!
Thanx!!!

Well, I told ya once already, a cat muffles the sound almost as much as a muffler, so YES IT WILL MAKE A LARGE DIFFERENCE. The first cat probably doesn't muffle sound too too much. Its the second cat you need to get rid of. You're best bet would to be to cut it off and try to sell it. Put a straight pipe in its place. Summit racing has high flow cats for cheaper then that.

Well I did it, and it made a little difference. It sounds a little deeper, but still not what I was looking for. I still have the stock manifolds on it, would that be the problem. I only have one cat, and now it's gutted. I thought my tailpipes were 2 1/2", but the are actually 2 1/4". Would it help putting bigger tailpipes on it? If it will, I will do it. I am not entirely unhappy with the outcome, I just wanna squeeze all the sound I can out of them. Thanks again for you replies!!

I am CRAZY, but not that crazy!! The cops around here would have a field day with me if I went straight pipes. I fired it up when I took off the cat, and it was F***ing LOUD!! I am a volunteer firefighter, so I get on it when duty calls, so I don't wanna blow out peoples ears going to a call. I'm just looking for that mean *** FORD POWER sound!!

Have your muffler shop hold different tips up to the tail pipe. The tips wont give you more sound, but change the tone of it. Long 3" a more hollow tone oo...ooo, 3" short slash cut with a (which I have)OO...OOOOO tone like a Ferrari!
