He says it starts & idles ok, but when he puts it into gear there is a "clunk" & the engine stalls, just like it did with the first tranny that failed & he removed.
So what would have to happen inside the tranny, to have it not move the vehicle, but stall the engine when put into gear???
Chillmiller, tell us more about you replacement tranny. You said it was new. Does that mean it was brand new, rebuilt, or it came from a salvage yard. I ask because you said something about the place where you got it having another available from a truck just like yours. Knowing something of the history of the replacement unit may help us find out what the problem is.

Reason: typo error
Maybe both tranny's are fine, your converter clutch maybe locking up. Eletrical problem.
Ohhhh yeah I like this idea, cause it would be like stopping a straight shift without pushing in the clutch & that sure would stall the engine & be common to both trannies!!!!
So look to the torque converter lock up side of things. Seems to me maybe there should be a code set in the tranny computer if it's acting out.
no it only did it once... witch leads me to belive i killed the tranny ( or it was about dead when i got it) a 1991 ford ranger 3.0 (3 bolt starter) xlt super cab 2x4
He said that it only happened once, with the rear wheels off the ground they should start to turn before the engine dies if the converter is locked up.
There is a spring that I have seen break in the valve body called the converter clutch shuttle valve spring, if it breaks it can kill the engine when its put into gear.
You can unplug the case connector for the 3-4 solenoid and tcc solenoid, this should answer the question of a external electrical problem.
I would like to know if the fluid level drops when the engine is running.
The spring your talking about dose the same thing, An auto will go in gear so quick it will stall the motor if TCC is on.
Yes you are correct.
With the rear wheels off the ground they will turn before the engine dies.
I have driven cars before that the converter wont release, you just have to get them moving before putting them into gear, and put them in neutral before coming to a stop.
He said its not killing the engine, it has only done it once, and that could have been many things.
The problem is it wont move in gear with the engine running.
back out you got it.... the shaft was in there but you might be right about the converter.... uhh... project for next weekend tho X_X im dead from doin that...
