Very cold today (10 degrees) but probably not related to my problem. She was cutting out (bogging down) and losing power dramatically out of nowhere when rpms over 1500, when the cut outs occurred she was also shaking (like I was driving over the wake you up strips they cut in the breakdown lanes). Lost most of my speed, but she wouldn't stall. Did this once and snapped out of it. 10 miles later did it again going up a hill. Thought maybe I got some bad diesel or condensation in the lines, so I doubled up the fuel treatment (use FPPF) and topped her off. Driving home with the fam, she did it again, went from 55 to about 20, was right near a service station so I just parked her there tonight and got a ride from the inlaws.
When I was waiting for my ride, I popped the hood and had the misses rev her. Seemed like when she got over 1500 rpms... sounded like an air leakage from the main air feeder pipe near the turbo (sorry guys I ain't that mechanical... don't know the real name). I also notice that this stock pipe is black and it seemed to be repaired by the previous owner with silver tape wrapped around much of this pipe. Is it a good guess that a leak here is the reason for my loss of power? Or does the shaking mean transmission or another problem? Please let me know what you think the problem may be, and if you narrow it down to 2-3 things, whats the most likely culprit? THANKS in advance for your advice!
I would check the up tubes and clamps. I would think this would be your problem (AIR LEAK) if you hear air leaking I would start there. Re tape it and get it home to fix. There will be some more knowledgable people to chime in shortly.Sorry to hear you had to catch a ride. The silver tape could be the foil on your up pipe if its on the drivers side.
Without knowing your vehicle specs:
I think you have something as simple as a bad CPS.
Quick, easy 10 minute fix.

It was dark (and damn cold out) BC so I can't recall whether it was on the driver side. I was glad that I could get the little ones home/in bed. I guess not getting enough air would bog her, but can't understand why she'd shake so?

Steve, Thanks for the link, I got my CPS fixed with the recall, so I rule this one out. Got some ideas from others tonight already, usually hand on the King of SUVs forum, but knew this was a 100% PSD problem.
I have a 00 4x4 X with 7.3, mostly stock, but running the superchip perf/tow setting.
Sounds to me like it could be a boost leak. When I drove out of Swamps with my new turbo and injectors and nailed it, I blew off a CAC tube. It was totally gutless after that.
I've had her since Sept-07. She's got about 137K now, I got her with 109K. The only problem I've had before this was a failed fuel line assembly... which I blogged about (I think in the X forum)... crappy breakdown with the fam then.... kinda paranoid now about being with the kiddos and being stranded
Did the CELllll (check engine light) come on? Does the FPPF have an anti-gel additive in it, or is it just a standard lubricity/cetane type additive? Is the engine oil full? When was the last time the air and fuel filters were changed?
Intake leak will not cause a loss of power, just let dirt in. Intake restriction can cause problems. Boost leak will cause reduced power. So will a lot of other things too, unfortunately.
If you had the CPS changed by the dealer, they prolly put in a gray one and that one has problems too. So I wouldn't rule it out yet...
Try putting your spare black CPS in and see.
Yeah, but it "fixes itself". I wouldn't expect a boost leak to be intermittent. If a boot blows, it won't drive well sometimes, and then go back to running rough.
