If it doesn't have jetliners exploding, mega shootouts, car chases, gratuitous sex, tons of special effects wizardry and the movie makes you have to think, then a lot of people call it boring.
Oh well.
I don't go to movies to make me "have to think." This is a mental exercise I can do daily. I go for entertainment and escapism. I don't know what there was to think about in this movie except, damn this is boring, isn't anything every going to happen? And, it never does. Watching him drinking beer, mowing his lawn over and over again doesn't really stir the blood, speaking of which I also don't need to see him coughing up over and over again. It gives a taint to the popcorn, and at 5 bucks a bag, I kinda want to enjoy it.jd
wow, i guess i'm a chump, I just saw tonight and loved it! Yea i would have liked a different ending, but in retrospect i think it was a great way to end it.....Dan
Same here!
I liked it!
Look, Clint is now like pushing 80 years-old. His Walter character might be about the same age. His Dirty Harry/Thunderbolt and Lightfoot days are way behind him now. The heart is there, but the legs aren't anymore.
A lot of people can relate to his character. I know people like Walter. They are bitter about what life has brought him and the changes going on in his world.

I had a '73 gran Torino 2-door. 351M, four on the floor - basic Starsky Mobile.
It was a slug with big guts. It had the factory 4Bbl option. That was all that attracted me to this thread... Huhh... Clint movie, well I'll be dipped.
The Cleveland engine was an overweight piece of scat. Only the four bolt main versions were worth having, and not by much. Too damned heavy. The same block made out of alloy would have been a champ, but not cast iron.
I had to lean out while standing on the back of an engine cherry picker to pull mine and change the clutch - it wanted to lift the back wheels off the floor and dump us all...
Clevelands are a bitch. The ports are too big anyway - it was a factory BOTCH job.
The car couldn't get out of it's own way because it was so heavy it just could not move.
Think about it - why was Starsky always shown gassing it and laying a cloud?
BUT IF YOU LIKE LAYING RUBBER: That was a fun car....
Cruising the PCH (which I did with it) was a blast, with side pipes.
But make no mistake - the car from concept to execution sukked bad.
I HAD ONE, I KNOW.
(THRUTHFULLY)
That piece of wrong engineering couldn't get out of it's OWN way.
A seventy with a windsor is the prime.....
I'll see it later when it's on the discount racks.
That car was as nose heavy as the Ayatollah
73 Torino's ain't worth anything, except for the motor.
I could care less about the car. I had hot cars too and I always thought the Gran Torino was UGLY. That's the main reason I never bought one. A friend of mine had one. Meh, not for me. I was always into Mustangs or Cougars, pre 1970. After that it was trucks and haven't looked back to a car since.
Going in, I would have bet money chicks would hate this film. Old guys, rough language, gang bangers, racial slurs galore..........I was shocked, women of all ages loved it. At the end, not a dry eye in the place.
I thought it was a good movie. Although, I originally seen the film about 2 months prior to its release. I have a friend who gets movies off the internet, illegally of course, but I'm not here to be flamed about that.
The version they played in the theater actually kinda sucked compared to the version I seen originally, they really REALLY watered down the theatrical version. I hope when the film is released on DVD that they also put out a directors cut version or something similar to the 1st/2nd cut version I witnessed.
To some up Clint's work in Gran Torino... In a world full of politically correct bull-crap its nice to see the good ole 'anti-hero' take a stand.
