I'm wondering how many people might be using a roof top safari rack on the X, and how conveniant thay are- I'm also wondering how you get stuff up there without beating the hell out of the sides of the truck-
Also anyone with lights mounted on the rack- can you tell me how/where you ran wire? Did you drill through the roof?(something I dont want to do) And does the rack mount to the factory roof rack sytem that is already there?
also brand names and prices would be great....
Thanks in advance!!
I have had this oone on my truck since 2003 and have been very pleased. It is very well built and can handle as much weight as the roof would allow. Last year I had a chance to buy another inflatable for my company and had no way to haul it. so we forklifted it onto the roof. It weighed 400#s and is 4' tall by 4' long...Got alot of funny looks. I have rear facing lights and you will have to run a power wire through the roof unless you do it through the weatherstripping on the hatch. Using a small bit and RVT or Body seam sealer worked great to seam up the hole. Be careful as to your switches for the lights as you CAN NOT have them come on while you are driving. And you will need to use a relay blah blah blah. I bought a fold up step and ground the mounting surface to match the trucks side and bolted it in with some reinforcments inside. I weigh 155lbs and it works for me...But if you are heavier you may want to come up with something else.
I do really like that step idea- never would have thought of that- however I am quite a bit over the 155 lbs that you are-I think i entered 10th grade more than that
Lets just say that I would need a step that would hold me and what ever I am carrying up to the rack- so my 225 lbs of gelatinous muscle, plus maybe 50 lbs??? so to be safe I would want a step rated for the 300 lb mark.........you think that step would hold it???
(and just so you dont think I'm a walking tub of butter- my 6'2" frame holds the 225 fairly well!!)
thanks
I normally jump on to the rear tire and load whatever I need up there. Its possible to secure it better than I have it I guess. Take your rear "jack" storage compartment off and look in there to see. Its a cool thing to be able to use the top of your truck. I found the steps on Ebay very cheap.
As to the satate laws pertaining to rear facing lights? I have no idea but when you have a guy pull up next to you an flip you the byrd you get the idea real quick.....Sorry un-named motorist.

Reason: Grammer
that's a nice looking truck. good lift and tire combo.
I like the looks of safari racks. especially with lights on the front and rear.
as far as rear facing lights, I've thought about mounting fog lights to the rear bumper to help me see where I'm backing up. I try to back into my driveway during the winter since I live on a fairly busy road in town that gets it's fair share of plow action. Basically I get plowed in. But I'm getting off subject. Safari racks are great when the truck is lifted and you need a new place for a bigger spare tire.
Thanks for the compliment!
I also have a driving light hooked to the reverse lights through a relay for that same reason..These trucks are hard to see out of.
