Ok heres the story. I found a 99 f250 diesel supercab long box 4x4. Its been sitting for a few months at an auction place. I dont know whether its a early or late model.
I was going to bid on it last week but they couldnt get it started. I watched them try to jump it with two vehicles, and spray some ether in it. It puffed a few times sounding like it would go, but never started. They told me to come back today.
Went back there today and they told me they had it sit inside overnight so it was nice and warm, and they still couldnt get it started. The guy told me i could buy it for 3500 bucks, but Im thinking about offering 2 grand.
I didnt get to snoop around it much, so i have no idea if the oil is full, what kind of oil (it came from a dealership trade in) how old the fuel filter is or anything.
Last tidbit of info is it is a higher mileage vehicle, 458,000 kms.
So tell me what the guru's think, would it be worth checking into more, potential problems, thoughts advice any discussion on it would be great!
What do you plan to do with it? The bad thing, you have no history for the truck. The engine may have been changed out 50,000 miles ago. I wouldn't bid on anything unless I could have time with it to check things out.
I agree with you fellas that it would be worth it for a parts truck, but Im looking at it more of a farm and second 4 wheel drive truck! I wish i could get at it to check it out a little more, an i may be able to check a few things out. Im not all sure what they would and wouldnt let a guy all check out.
The body isnt mint on it either, it has a little rust, and some dents and whatnot.
I bought a truck like that except mine is an 01 2wd i paid 1500.00 for it cause it wouldnt start turned out to be the valve cover came unplugged i done put 3000 miles on it try to get it cheaper
i just bought a 02 350 CC 2 wheel diesel for $700 sight unseen. it cost me $500 to get it here from Delaware. kinda disappointed though, cause the wiring is butchered so i will never get it running, and i can't tell how many miles are on it.
but i will make my money back on it in parts, plus some .
I checked it out a wee bit more, they didnt have the keys handy so i could play with it though.
Manufacturers date 04/98. Oil level was halfway to the full mark, but it was pretty black. There was either oil or diesel in the valley, Im leaning towards oil because the engine was obviously washed, and the liquid in the valley was black like the oil.
What other things should i be checking out here? The body isnt as bad as i first thought, needs a little paint here and there, and it even has a lift kit on it.
I would buy it even if the motor didn't turn over at all... Thats cheap. Especially if u get it for $2K. Did they plug it in or no? Did you check the fuel bowl for fuel? Listen for the pump? Id try plugging it in after making sure its getting fuel. and then using your truck to jump it. I would do all of this after buying it for 2k. LOL OH and make sure you check fuses and relays ofcourse.
I wouldn't give them $300 for it if it wouldn't start, but that is just me. You may never get it running right. Now on the other hand, if it runs, they are going to want more money for it.
No I havent checked for codes. Im going to try and get the key and try to give it a whirl this week. I tried to remove the fuel filter cap by hand today but it was on there good.
Nolan ya got some great ideas, but i do wanna be careful with what i try there. If i try too much and get it going, I just jacked the price right up lol.
More of looking at ideas or more stuff what to look for. I know its worth it for the money, but I dont want or need a parts truck, i wanna be able to get er up and going!
It could be 1000's of things. Thats why i would buy it broke then see if you cant get it running at home. Worse comes to Worse through a VB in the tranny and sell the tranny for $2000 as a "built" tranny! LOL
