cold starting problems.

Ive been having some problems these last couple mornings with tihs cold spurt. It seems like if it colder than 10f out i have on cylinder that takes for ever to fire.this morning about -5 out i had my truck plugged in for about 3 hours.i went out let the glow plugs cycle 3 times before i tride her.she fired up but that one cylinder didnt fire so i let her run about 30 sec,set it off cylcled the plugs 3 more times and it still didnt fire.so i let it run a while, whent out reved it up a couple times shut it down.cycled the plugs 3 more times and it finally cought. could this mean i have a weak glow plug or is the normall for it to this when its this cold out? Also the battery light is on while its running what can this mean?thanks

When it fires off just let it run. The temps will come up and the cylinders that are dead will come alive. You might have a bad GPR or glow plugs. It is cold out so these things happen.

You probably have a dead glow plug in that cylinder. Like Jeremy said, once it gets started, let it warm up. The cold cylinder will heat up.

On edit: Here's a good write up on the GPR and glowplug system:

Had the same problem a couple of years ago. Ended up 5 of 8 glow plugs were bad! Was winter, cold and wife had the garage full. F%^d dealer fixed me up and then stole my wallet! Is what it is, repalcing glow plugs is not a winter driveway fix.

the gpr relay was just replaced so i no its not that,if its 20 deg or above even if i dont plug the truck in it wont do it.What would make my batt light come on and stay on while the truck is running my truck has never done this before. It turns over good after sitting all night, and i cleand my batt conections and its still on.Also i drove my truck in 4hi for about 4 miles at about 65 -70 mph, on dry pavement will that hurtthe transfer case? there all the same size tire 265/75/16.

Battery light that stays on usually indicates a dying alternator. Just went through that this fall. Check it out. If you are driving that fast on drive pavement in 4x4, that's not good. You can leave your hubs locked but shift out of 4x4 in those conditions.

yup the alternater is shot.just tride to go to town, and i had to turnaround because my dash lights were getting dimmer and so wernt my head lights.my voltedge meter was also dropping.how much doone of things things cost.probly a dumb question but this is my first diesle so i dont no if it would be more exspensive than a gas motor alternater.

Starting problems...

I am wintering in SW New Mexico. It has not been below 32 degrees for some time. I have had difficulty starting my '01 F250, 7.3L diesel twice now. I let the glow plug light go out and try to start. It will fire very briefly then stop. This happened to the point, this AM, that I squirted a 1/2 sec. of starting fluid into the intake. It started right up. Am I perhaps looking at a glow plug problem? Thanx for the input.
