Cold Air coming in!

On my 04 Explorer, driving down the road,,,got lots of cold air coming in behind the Glove Box,,it's up high in the dash,,like a grill work,,maybe on top of a cabin filter setup???

Today going down the road 12 degrees out,,,with blower on 3 ,,the cold air would stop coming in,,,,get to warm,,turn fan down to 1 or 2,,cold air starts coming back in,,,what the Hell,,,this thing got GREMLINS ??

All vacum lines seem to be in place,,any ideas ??,,,,thanks,,,Mark

No cabin air filter on the '04s; sounds like you've got a plenum leak. Pull the glove box and have a passenger try to locate the leak while you're driving.

Check to make sure your recirc door (fresh air door) is working and closing. Drop the glove box down out of the way and look up to the left for the front of the recirc grate. Watch the door through the grate as you turn the mode switch. I can't remember which settings open and close that door but try 'em all to see if it does work.

Ok I beleive its the re-circ. door(fresh air door),,it was opening and closing as I turned the blower fan up and down,,,,put fan on 3rd speed,,because was cold in there,,,heats up,,ok warm enought(maybe 5 mins),,,just be turning the fan down to low,,,suddenly feel cold air blowing in ?? Why would it be opening and closing by just moving the fan switch ?

The recirc door open/closes by vacum,,right ??,,,, it has been blowing cold air all winter so far,,just yesterday it closed a few times,,,we can tell because it warms up quickly then,,my son would just open the glove box,,,and tell instantly if it was open or closed,,and only thing I would change was blower speed ! any ideas ??

Yep, the mode doors are all controlled with vacuum motors. The recirc door can't be flopping around or you will have a fresh (cold) air draft coming through above the fan. I wonder if you pulled the radio out if you could see the vacuum motor for the recirc door. Might be able to see what is wrong. Let us know.

Now as far as I recall it has been cold for quite some time,,,Just recently though I did notice some mice basteds in the Explorer,,,I caught 2 of them little basteds in a mouse trap on the rear floor,,,maybe those little sum-bitchs chewed on something for that re-circ door,,,,,looking in behind the glove box,,all looks fine, nothing off, or chewed.

The day I was looking up in there with a flash light,,glove box tipped out,,,ex running,,,no matter what control I turned or rotated,,,the re-circ door never shut,,the controls would switch from defrost, heat, vent, etc,,but never did see that re-circ door close ! It's like 18 deegres now,,-2 this am,,,will be waiting for a warmer day,,,How does the radio come out ?? am/fm single CD w/tape !
