2000 excursion heater

It started last week with a trouble code P1299(cylinder head over temp. protection acttive) The dealer said thermostat but I replaced it a mouth ago so I took it home replace it again, Did not work code came up again put new cylinder head temp. unit code came up again, replaced coolant temp. unit it did not work at all. The gage would not work at all then, untill the code come up the the gage would read Hot then it would go back to cold. Put the old coolent unit back on the gage worked then it read norm. Well the code has not come back. but now the heater works now and then. When I frist start it up it will blow warm/hot air then it will blow cold air. Drive the truck down the road it will work the the gage will go to hot but not into the red and fall right back down to norm. and start blowing cold air then I drove it a few miles to get any air out of the cooling system there was some air. It started working good for 10 miles got home it started blowing cold air. let it cool down started it back up as it got warmer the heater did to, when the gage hit norml. range it started blowing cold What is up.

Hello jshortf and Welcome to FTE! I think you are on the right track by trying to purge the system of air. You have removed some of the air but it sounds like there is more there. If you can park the truck on a incline with the rad higher than the motor. Let it idle awhile (15-20 minutes) with the heater on. This should get the air out of the block.

If you have a cap on the radiator, crack it open a bit so that the air escapes. On a 2000 you probably just have the overflow container.

I Have been trying to get all the air out. The code is back(P1299) On tue. I was driving it and the temp gage was moving up to norm then it fell to cold. few miles it jumped to hot and this time it was coming out of the rad. in 20 min. every thing was ok. Today I am pulling the rad. when I pulled the overflow hose it sounded like a air hose.could that been my trouble. the truck has not been used in over 24 hr. should it have pressure like that?

If you had that much air coming out of it, then yes.
