Local 400 build,

A guy in the local paper is trying to sell a 400m with 7300 miles on it

he claims it 450 hp

here is what he says it has

its bored 40 over, keith black pistons,rings rods and bearings. stailess scat crank, aluminum rockers, high flow oil pump, heads are ported, with double rate springs, comp cam, 70 gpm water pump, chrome ford valve covers, chrome oil pan, 750 double pumper holley carb, msd everything,

What is a fair price to pay for this as it is sitting on a stand and no way to hear it run or to tear it down to conferm parts.

What is a Guess on what the true Hp/trq would be

if i were you id demand a head to be pulled of to see the condition pof the cylinder and what pistons you have, if what he sayas is right, you have good pieces there. Ask what kind of heads the engine has, cuz 2v open chambered heads are very delicate and have water pasages near the ports making them nearly imposible to port, also 450 hp with the 2v heads is quite hard-impossible.... ask also what cam was used in the build

A couple of comments:
1) 450 HP? Look at TMI's dyno tests. I doubt it.
2) I port 351 C 2V heads. You can reduce restrictions, but you can't make them racing heads.
3) Don't buy one, build one

The guy is only asking $1200.

I've never heard of a stainless steel crank shaft.

yeah i have, an australian guy who posted around here said he used a eagle steal crank, so it could be true....

I don't believe the hp rating, but it might be a good motor. Maby have him put it in and get it running then if it seems ok pay him.

SCAT and Eagle make steel cranks for 351W motors. With the right timing set, these cranks can be used in a 351M/400 block.

To get 450 HP, you need lots of compression or lots of cam. If it's a low compression motor with a big cam, don't buy it.

How does he know it makes 450HP?
Was it Dyno'ed?

If so get the Dyno numbers. See what the RPM is where it makes 450 HP, and what the torque is at the lower RPMs.

What Intake Manifold does it have?

How does it get the compression to get 450 HP? Aussie heads?
Flat Top zero deck height pistons?

Swung By

Well I swung out today and took a look,

Looked clean, edel performer intake, holly on it and had a demon 725 fot it as well

Had a box of other stuff for it, all the Msd stuff , powermaster alt

New 4 core radiator with elec fan

Told the guy it would be a core since I had no way to verify internals or to hear it, or play with it.

But it did have crome ford valve covers, that were cherry

Offered $600
