Is the ZF 5sp. a direct replacement for the M5OD?
My '89 F-150 has a Mazda 5sp. that is spitting shavings into the fluid.
I read that the ZF is a better transmission but it looks shorter overall than a M5OD, so will it fit with my existing driveshaft?
Thanks
I believe it is actually a few inches shorter and you'll probubly need a new drive shaft. I had a site with all the specs on tons of truck trannies weight, ratio, splines, lengths all that good stuff, ill do some searching and see if i can find it.
I know this is about a 4x4 truck, but the two wheel drive ZF will not directly swap with a two wheel drive Mazda. The ZF has a fixed yoke and the Mazda has a slip yoke, plus the lengths are different. Four wheel drive trucks, the lengths are within an inch or two, going by what I've read on the subject.

If necessary-get the drive shift from the same vehicle that you get the tranny from in the bone yard-as long as the wheel base and the rear axle is the same on the boneyard truck as on the truck that this stuff will be installed in. And as long as the boneyard truck and the truck this is going into are both either 4x2 or 4x4. The Yard would probably give you the "shaft" for free with the purchase of the tranny.
