5sp Tanny

I've got a 86 F150 4x4 300, offy dp intake, Edelbrock 1403 carb, efi manifolds, 9" rear 3.73 gears, 4sp od non granny geared. I am wanting to switch over to a 5sp. Either a M5R2 or a ZF S542 which ever one I can find. I don't do to much towing so I know the M5R2 would be ok for me but would rather have the ZF. I do alot of highway and in town driving. Do alittle off roading. I am wanting to know will these trannys bolt right up to my motor? I know Im gonna have to do some changing on the slave cylinders since these are internal slaves and mine is external. Also will current driveshaft work or have to change? What are your guys opinions? Is this a good switch? Any help appreciated Thank You!

This will be a very good switch.

Even the M5OD has a lower first, gets rid of the 2nd to 3rd gap, and still has OD. ZF is a little wider, but still more better imo.

You could get lucky and find an '87 with everything you need.

IIRC, someone here posted it as a simple swap, bolt in.

I would measure the existing trans and cross member locations, & take a pic of the cross member before looking for parts. You may need the newer cross member. Ditto the driveshaft.

Sorry I can't be more specific--my plans to do this swap never happened, but there are other posts here talking about it. If I find one, I'll post a link.

Thanks for the help. Still alittle confused they. Read through the post on those links and never really covers the years of trucks I am wanting to convert to. Im wanting to go from a 90's transmission into a 80-86 truck. Anyone else got any info? Thanks!

The sasiest way to do this is to get a truck with the same wheel base.

Take the tranny, transfercase, slave cylinder, and both driveshafts.
Any 86-96 with 300 ,302, or 351 engines will have what you need. This should basicly bolt in. The rear driveshaft might be an issue as the 9" was not too common after about 83. Everything started going 8.8"

Unless you do a ton of highway driving and plan on keeping the truck for 5+ years this will just be a waste of money. The OD will only get you about 2mpg more on the highway.

Sounds like a great addition to a real good rig, esp for the hwy, w/those rear gears. Does it have a D44 up front? If not, what.
Thanks,
cf

He's already got OD, he's looking for driveability. The ratios in the 4 speed OD create a massive vacuum.

I see.....Other then a mild durability incrase absoluly no advantage to this swap.

This is my opinion. Not a fact.
