I have an '85 F-150 with a straight six, 5spd (originally 4spd), 9" rear end. There's no tag on the diff cover to go off of, and I can't find any concrete evidence of what gears I have. I know it's an open diff, and my door tag says "17". I know 18 means 3.08 and 19 is 3.55 when it comes to 8.8", but what the freak is 17?
Holy CRAP!! 2.47?!?! Well that explains why it's such a dog even with that granny first! I gotta get a tach for the thing so I can figure out what kind of RPMs I'm getting on the highway. Helps explain why I can't get the thing over 75 mph even though RPMs sound relatively low though... 370,000 miles on that old motor means it's simply too worn out to get itself going any faster.
Wow! I can't believe those gears are so freaking high. Thanks for the help guys! I've been wondering that for years and never got around to asking anyone who might know.
omg. 2.47's holy crap. i would so be switching those gears out to atleast 3.08's if you still want some good mileage but get above 75. Ive got 3.25's and a 302 and ive gotten up to bout 110 is what a friend of mine following me said i got up to. since the speedometer only goes to 85. sorry for sorta hijacking the post.
I need to re-gear the thing anyway. It's got its original gearset in it and it's so worn out that when you jack the rear of the truck up and turn one wheel, the other doesn't start spinning until the first one is around half a revolution. Been trying to find an 8.8 for cheap that I could just bolt right up in there but nothing has come along that's cheap enough yet. "Cheap" is a relative term and I bought the truck for $200, so... yeah...
