I'm assembling my piles of parts into a truck and I'm confused. Is the hood spring on the plate that attaches to the valance (that has the F O R D on it) stickin up. Or is it on the plate attached to the hood sticking down.
The pictures in the assembly manuals show it on the hood side (pointing downward) but I have two of the lower plates and both have the spring on them pointing up. which is correct?
The rod with the spring points up from the filler panel on a '48-50, and down from the hood on a '51-52. The latching mechanism is in the hood on the '48-50, and in the filler plate above the grill on the '51-52. That's one of the reasons you can't mix and match parts from the front clips from the different styles:
The problem is that according to the picture you sent for 48-50 trucks, the spring attaches to the plate that attaches to the hood. However, as Kevin mentioned my spring is also on the lower panel that attaches to the F O R D valance panel.
Where is the spring on your 49 and 48 truck? Like the picture in the IPC?
The plate in the pic is the plate that bolts to the hood and the latch pin is just shown under as this is where it goes. They are just showing how it all fits together. actually bolts to the panel with the F O R D letters
# 16848 bolts to the hood and it has the "CATCH" in it so to catch the hood closed the pin needs to go on the upper grill panel.
On 48-50 trucks, the spring was attached to the top of the panel with the FORD letters. On 51 and 52 trucks, a similar spring was attached to the hood.
Maybe this will help.
Here's the same part but from a 51/52 (51 pictured). Note the absence of the spring (which mounts to the hood. Missing the latch assembly that bolts over the reddish paint, but note the hole in center for the hood mounted spring and safety catch).
Here's the same part but from a 48-50. Note the spring in center. Also, see picture of hood below.
Here's the underneath of a 48-50 hood. Note that the spring goes inside the hole in the middle of the pan under the hood.
TRIVIA TIME. By the way, can anyone tell if this hood came off of a 6 cyl or a V8 truck? Let's see how well you guys know your trucks.
Well, if you look at the passenger side it looks like an eight, but if you look at the driver's side it looks like it might be in the six position. But, it would be difficult to stretch a six shield across to meet the eight position. I think I'll stick with the eight.
