Sounds like either your glows are not staying on long enough, or a couple or three are dead.
What was the temperature when you fired it up?
This is a 28 degree start, back when my truck was n/a and had a working GPC: YouTube - Starting up my 6.9 IDI Diesel
I have a little extra timing dialed in and the pump isn't quite stock, hence the lopey start...
And, just because I can't help but gloat, YouTube - -31 Cold Start
Yes, it is plugged in, but, it's still a cold start by anyone's standards. That humming you hear that slowly speeds up is the fuel pump... LOL
And, that is done with a single group 31 battery
I just fired it up last Monday to move it, hadn't run since mid September... Shoveled the snow off the hood, dropped a battery in, plugged it in, and 4 hours later it fired up on a 10 second glow cycle like it had been running the day before.
I can't make myself get rid of that thing for all I'm worth... LOL
Joe, you gave those plugs 8-9 seconds, that's a bit short. On the other hand it may be a 6.9 thing, as my buddy's F250 does just the same, whereas my 7.3 will start right up on 5 plugs for 12 seconds in 50F... (did I hear ya say the 6.9 is better than the 7.3? )
My 6.9 will fire up within 7 to 8 turns of the motor at 30 degrees without using the glow plugs, and about 2 turns with the plugs. But its been rebuilt and timing is advanced. Now my 7.3 wont crank at 70 degrees without glow plugs but it is a 21 year old motor so i guess its tryin to get wore out.
sounds exactly like my truck trying to start, itll blow some black smoke, but take way longer to start, if it does. turn, try, turn, try, turn, try, turn, try\
I wouldn't give up on your typing just yet, Joe. You are getting better, and its not a bad skill to have...... not that theres anything wrong with having more Utube videos with 6.9 IDIs, heehee.
Actually I timed the glow time on my wrist watch and only counted 5 seconds, maybe 6. If you are running OEM Beru/motorcraft glow plugs, thats not really enough. 10 seconds even on a warm day is the norm. If on the other hand you are running something aftermarket like wellmans or bosch or other, then 7 seconds tops (until you can replace them with berus).
All these videos of 6.9s starting up...its enough to put me right in my happy place.
I had a loose connector on one of my glow plugs this winter. Would cause one cylinder to bump for the first few seconds on cold start, but never hesitated to fire on its own. At 0C or about 32F and the block heater plugged in, the truck will fire without glow plugs at all after a single full turn. If its sitting out in the sun on a hot summer day, same thing. With glow plugs, half a turn.
iam still type this just makes it easyer on people to under stand my question i dont know whats in there glow plug wise havent chaged them since i have had the truck
Just wonderin are you holding the pedal down when its turnin over? My 7.3 starts WAYYYYY easier if I hold the pedal about 3/4 down, as soon as mine gives me that one single sputter, I know I've got her whipped.
I would try holdin the pedal down a little bit just for giggles, I tell everyone my truck has one of the worlds best anti-theft devices due to the fact of you have to know the secret combonation it seems to get it started. I've only had two of my friends be able to start my beast, but the other dozen or so always fail miserably.
