I read in several older posts that the Fram CA146 Air Cleaner would fit a stock 66 390. I purchased one only to find out it's half the size of what I need.
Anyone have the correct number? Its about 11.5 inches ID and 13 OD.
Thanks,
I did that at Advance Auto. Do you realize how many different boxes of filters that are 12 inch sq. Finally asked the clerk and he said that they don't make one. Went to Auto Zone 7 O'Reilys with the same results. Even check Wally world.

You give up too easily. Sometimes you have to stick with it. There is one there that will fit.

The only stock 1966 390 air cleaner would be in a car: Galaxie/LTD.
These trucks came with 352's and the air cleaner is an oil bath.
The oil bath air cleaner is 12.68" in diameter and is 4" high.
--------------------------------------------------------- * * The dry paper filter air cleaner used on 1968/72 F100/350's w/302/360/390's is 11 32" I.D. / 13.30" O.D.
This air cleaner's paper filter element is C8AZ9601A (Motorcraft FA50).
This same element was also used on the 1968/71 Galaxie/LTD's with 302's, 390's & 428's.
I had a similar problem (different engine), went to O'Reilly's and the counter guy and I went back and went through their inventory until we found what I needed. You just need to find the right guy to talk to.
Maybe take a six pack and sit it on the counter as an inducement LOL.
I know I'll get ye'll at for this, but I guess I would check the engine block data and use the data from it to determine the year window of what possible air breather he might have. Then use that data and try to cross reference it at the parts store and go from there.
I went by the measurements the OP posted...I looked at EVERY aircleaner element dimension from 1965 thru 1978.
Motorcraft FA50 is the only element that fits the criteria. This element also was used on 1968/72 cars with 429/460 engines, 1969/72 351W engine, 1970/72 351C engine, 1971/72 400 engine.
The element used after 1972 is 11.00" x 9.00" which too small to match the dimensions the OP posted.
Bill (NumberDummy),
I tried both Filter Numbers you gave and Motorcraft.Com & the local Ford Dealer has nothing. The Ford Dealer tried to sell me a filter that was half the size I needed and after showing him the old one he said he has nothing close.
I purchased a complete Air Breather Unit that fits the carb but is only 9 inches in diameter only to discover that the stud that screws into the carb and thru the breather is too short.
I can't win for losing!
Is there any kind of part number stamped or whatnot on the old filter...since most are prolly stenciled on you may have to look really close for hints of where it may have been...

Take the Motorcraft part number FA50 to NAPA or an indie auto parts store, they can cross it over to the brands they sell.'
Obsolete parts vendor Green Sales Co. in Cincinnati OH (800-543-4959) has 9 of these filters under P/N: C6RZ6A631A.
Thanks again Bill & CS.
No part number on the old filter. Looks like it's been in use for the past 10 years as I bought the truck in 94 and have only changed parts once right after I got it.
