When I was home on leave,I went to start that old ford up and that 300 was knocking and increased with RPMs,It wasn't bad and didn't sound like it was coming from below but I can't tell what kind of knock it is. The last time I had an engine knock, that engine spun a rod bearing real bad. (Camry 4 banger) Could it be the fuel was old,or not getting enough spark or what?
Along with that, the front drivers wheel clicks/clanks when I drive and I just replaced the bearings in July. But should I be concered with the knock? It had straight 30 weight oil until 2004 when I got it and started using 10W-30 because of the milage and had fairly good maintence done on it its whole life....all 20 of them in May.
I would doubt it is a spark knock amd yes you should be concerned until you find out what it is.
Best I can describe a rod bearing sounds like a marble rattling in a glass jar. A piston pin bearing is a lighter sound but with a distinctive double knock. A lifter is a "clack" which will only speed up about half the revs of the engine. My guess would be a lifter but only a guess.
By the way I meant to say in your Chevy thread that some guys with fuel pump problems would fit an after market pump on the frame rail to avoid future hassle with the stock one. Good luck.
Its not really bad at idle, but once you get it up a little, its more noticable. It didnt do it before and all of a sudden is. Im hoping its just a valve or something "small" and not a rod or main bearing. Im gonna tell them to not drive it until I can look at it.
