? Just returned from dealer, told me a duplicate key is $80. This includes programming. It's for a 2003, any one have a better suggestion?

Thanks

Check with a local locksmith. Unless you have lost the keys, I think you can go to Walmart and have a spare made. I had one made for a 2004 Tahoe and it works fine.

Still have the key, dealer said that a "chip" in key required programming to start due to theft protection.

Thats what I thought about the Tahoe key, but to my surprise it worked. I have one hid on it in case I get locked out or lose keys.

Ford does have a chip, no BS there. Walmart can cut a spare key, but it will only unlock the doors, it won't start the vehicle. It's part of ford's PAT anti-theift system. I've been there on my 01 ford escape.

They are still a little expensive to make at a locksmith, but cheaper than the dealer. I had one made for about $55.00 a while back.

If you only have one programmed key, then you will have to get the second key programmed by either the dealer or a locksmith that has access to a Ford scan tool. However, once you have two programmed keys, you can program up to 6 more keys yourself, using the following procedure:

- First, insert the first programmed key into the ignition cylinder and rotate the ignition switch to the “Run” position for 3 seconds.

- Turn the ignition switch to the “Off” position and remove the first key. Within 5 seconds of turning the ignition switch off, insert the second programmed key into the cylinder, and turn the ignition switch to the “Run” position for 3 seconds.

- Next, turn the ignition switch to the “Off” position and remove the second key. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition switch off, insert an un-programmed key into the cylinder and turn the ignition switch to the “Run” position for 1 second.

- The new key is now programmed and should start the vehicle. If you need to program any additional keys, then you must repeat this entire procedure for each un-programmed key.

theres got to be some way to bypass that garbage. one way might be to put a key under the plastic in the steering column near the key switch. then any key with the correct cut should work. ive modded my extra key ('93, non-pats) by cutting off the square head of the key, drilled a small hole for a way to pull it out if need be and just have the teeth in the switch. key buzzer disabled. looks like theres no key in it. i just twist the switch and go. no more looking for the right key in the dark. my '88 worked without the key altogether after 150,000 miles.they should make some of that stuff optional. not everyone is worried about theft. i bet with a wiring diagram you could figure out how to bypass it. one more reason to not have anything to new.

I haven't found it to be that big of deal. Whats the chances of loosing both keys. In our 01 escape, we went to W,Va and locked the keys in the escape. We brought the 2nd key in case that would happened and had it in the wifes purse. Of course the purse was in the escape as well. We had to call my ford dealer at home and get the key number from thier records. Then have a key cut at the ford garage in town. The new key would only unlock the doors as it was not programed, but thats all we needed as the programed keys were inside.
