It all depends on what ur looking for. what size engine you have....Glasspacks are pretty loud...But I dont know if they are louder than flowmaster 40 series. but I am pretty sure they are.
I know thta cherry Bomb mufflers are really loud..., my friend just got a ticket for his truck being to loud...he has a Cherry Bomb Vortex si/do then two 12 inch glasspacks to pipes straight out the back.....
cherry bombs and glass packs are good if u want cheep sound, eventually the fiberglass on the inside will rot away leaving you with straight pipes, which is really loud. flowmasters on the other hand are all made of metal and wont rot out. leaving you with a lasting investment. i heard a 2001 chevy with the 5.3L and a glass pack and it sounded pretty bad, really loud and obnoxious, i put dual 40s on my truck last april and thus far is the best investment i have made to my truck, it sounds really tough at idle with out being annoying, and when i get all up on it the truck gives a pretty comanding clean sound. i havent been hassled at all by the police for the truck being too loud but my friends say they can hear me a couple blocks away...in my opinion, if u want head aches buy the cheep stuff...cuz in comparison u definately get what u pay for.
if u have any questions or live in the LA area, write me and we'll meet sometime.
That wouldn't be right....Why would you put cherrybomb vortex high performance muffler with glasspacks?! That would kill sound. I had the cherrybomb vortex single in/dual out on my 99 F-150 4.2L and it wasn't very loud to begin with. I wanted louder and suggested glasspacks, the guy laughed and said that would make it virtually inaudible. glasspacks are significantly quieter than performance mufflers, and adding them to a performance exhaust system would deaden sound. Either you use one or the other, never both. Plus using both is going to be severely restrictive on flow. I am running flowmaster 30 series (pro street/strip) on my 86 F-250 HD 4x4 w/ 351W, slightly modified, and those are probably as loud as I'll get without going 80 series (muscle car rear mount). I wanted to quiet the truck cause it's too loud, so I was told to use dual glasspacks on my set up. I have been pulled over 3 times for noise, cited for noise pollution and disturbing the peace the first two times; I was cruising around at 3am through neighborhoods, and ticketed with a $100 fine the third time. I personally think the 30's are louder than the 40's which my buddy has on his Camaro. My boss has a Chevy K5 Blazer with Cherrybomb glasspacks and it's not very loud.
Bottom line, here's my breakdown in order of noise level, quietest to loudest:
*Flowmaster 70 series single in/dual out
*Cherrybomb Vortex/Vortex II single in/dual out
*Flowmaster 50 series single in/dual out
*Cherrybomb 18" tube glasspacks
*Flowmaster 30 series dual in/dual out
*Flowmaster 40 series dual in/dual out
*Flowmaster 80 series single in/dual out rear mount
Sound quality is totally different and up to the individual's desired effect, but I find that my 30's have the nicest sound, and the loudest I want them (already way too loud). They scavenge the exhaust gasses the best, resulting in a better sound.
I have a Flowmaster 40 - 3" single in/out with the origional Cat w/3" exhaust back. I also have shorty headers. My 1990 F250, 351, E40D, 124K miles, runs great and sounds great too. Its not real loud untill you get on it. Then you can hear the Flowmaster at work. I use my truck for hunting too, so I don't want a lot of noise. You will like the 40!!!

My friend has true duals with 6 inch glasspacks, and I put my word on it they are louder than any exhaust system I have heard.....I have heard Flomaser,Borla,B&B,Dynomax, and a few others.....plus they sound real nice..
Are you sure they're glasspacks and not thrush packs? A thrushpack looks like a glasspack and is much louder than almost any muffler out there. It's basically a hollowed out glasspack. But a Cherrybomb glasspack (18"L, 6"D, angled or straight entry/exit) is not louder than a flowmaster 40 series. People often make glasspacks much louder by running the truck till at normal idle temp, turning it off and putting a garden hose in the tailpipe up into the pack and turning it on for a bit with cold water. Doing this once a day for several days/weeks will basically blow out the fiberglass packing and cause a much louder but similar tone.
As to your quote, I was replying because you stated your friend had glasspacks and cherrybomb vortex. I had assumed you meant combined, not at different times, and I was replying that using the two combined would kill sound and create too much back pressure, and this is a fact because you are using too much suppression which results in worse flow, less power, etc. And if you meant at separate times, you are absolutely right, the glasspacks are much louder than cherrybomb vortex, but not than flowmaster 40 or 30 series.
LAST EDITED ON 26-Sep-01 AT 09:33 AM (EST)[p]If he has glasspacks that are older than one year, I believe that, too. Glasspacks have a very short life, that's why the're so cheap, only $20-$30 each. Same for a Cherrybomb Vortex muffler. It is usually between $45 and $60. This is because the fiberglass packing usually rots out from condensation in your pipes, and you now have a hollowed out glasspack/muffler. Once the fiberglass rots and blows out, you have a much louder pack/muffler. That's what people mean by saying "it will sound better once it breaks in", meaning it will sound better literally when it breaks, when the packing is blown out. Flowmasters and Gibson etc. are all more expensive, 30 series being close to $110 each because they last. A Flowmaster is all metal construction, so there is no chance of blow out or any fiberglass to rot. There is a break-in period, but only for the muffler to cake a bit of exhaust junk on it and for the pipes to get run through and roughed up and for the metal to expand/contract and get worn in like a new pair of jeans (usually a week or 2 to do this). But a true Cherrybomb Glasspack, brand new, is not close to the sound level of a Flowmaster 30 or 40 series (pro street/strip) or a Raptor, or even an Edelbrock RPM series s/steel muffler. I agree, some Dynomax are not very loud mufflers like the Ultra-Flo s/steel kit, it is about the same or a bit quieter than a glasspack, but it has a very full sound. The Dynomax Super Turbo's are louder than glaspacks, and are louder than flowmaster 50's, about the same sound as 40 series Flowmasters. Perhaps you were hearing the Ultra-Flo Dynomax, and Flowmaster 70 series which are the quieter truck mufflers. But a new glasspack is not as loud as a Dynomax Super Turbo, Flowmaster 30, 40 or 50 series (especially 80's, man those are like a warplane!). Maybe a blown out one (a year or so old is as loud). Borla is not very loud, Gibson Supertruck has a nice loud full sound like a Flowmaster 50 series. Hooker Super Competitions are quite loud, like a Flowmaster 30 series. A real cool muffler (not street legal) is the Flowmaster Scavenger series header muffler. They are a 4 in muffler that collects the header tubes right at the header, and they are freakin loud like you wouldn't believe!
my friend has the same setup on his truck, a cherry bomb turbo (single imput/ duel output) then two cherry bomb glasspacks immediatly after. Let me tell you they are LOUD. Good for getting the attention of women in other vehicles.
i have a 2001 ford ranger with a 4.0 liter V6 in it. i had a flowmaster and i think that it was a 50 series, and it sounded like crap, like a bumble bee. what will it sound like if i get a single in/dual outlet 40 series or a 80 series. i want it to be loud and have a kinda deep rumble, like a small block V8. will the 80 or 40 series make it sound just plain really good?
if you guys want to know what sounds louder amongst the differnt flowmaster mufflers go to www.flowmastermufflers.com they have all the mufflers rated for loudness. much easier way to tell how loud they are is to see how they rate them from the factory instead of one person's opinion against the other because everyone's interpretation of loudness or what sounds good is different obviously.
i had a single in dual out 18 inch glasspack on my 91 f150 302 with turndowns behind the rear bumper and that truck was louder than any other truck ive heard whether they were running flowmasters or any other type of turbo or performance muffler. probably as loud as just having straight pipes. which it probably was cuz it was blown out
