A couple of weeks ago I picked up this '77 bronco for $800. It does drive, the brakes aren't so good. The body doesn't look to have any bondo or replaced panels, it looks like a good starting point for a restoration.
The 302 looks stock, it has the stock 2bl carb, it does however have long tube headers on it. I would like to build a reliable and smooth running engine with a little more horses than the stock 150hp.
Here is what i'm thinking of using: GT40 heads, keeping the long tube headers, and maybe a truck avenger carb.
You done GOOD! I wish I could have found it for $800! Is it a stick shift? If so, I'll give you $900 for it!
Full length headers is one of the very best mods you can do for low and mid range power. To complement them, I would just use a mild cam, no more than about 206@.050, an Edelbrock Performer and a vac secondary 600.
This will give you good low and mid range torque making it drivable and peppy, given it's light weight.
The complete package(HCI) that Edelbrock has for this motor is a good example of what's possible, similar results can be produced with other brand parts of course. GT40 heads are a big upgrade over what the motor probably has now, and there is a wild array of cam you could use, but something like the Comp XE250/256 or maybe the 255DEH with 1.7 roller rockers.. lots of possibilities depending upon your combo.
Reworked stock E7 heads (smaller combustion chamber) Probably has D7 or D8 castings on the engine (large combustion chamber = no power)
Summit 4400 camshaft (same one sold by Edelbrock as a Performer Plus cam)
Wieand Stealth intake
Holley Truck avenger 570cfm carb or Edelbrock 500cfm carb
headers already on the truck
Should push you well above 200hp at the flywheel there....

Actually if that doesn't make close to 300hp somethings wrong..
guys, thanks for all this info. this is just what i'm looking for, not too extreme but if i'm rebuilding i should improve it.

it is an automatic. i got the bronco, 4 wheels with street tires, 4 other wheels with buckshots, brand new unpainted fiberglass hood, and a new in box soft top..... yeah, holy crap!!
I didn't pick up on it the first time I saw this thread, but after looking again at the second picture, it's quite obvious why an engine overhaul is in the plans.

yeah, the engine will be coming out in the next week or so. along with all the trim than can be sent off to re-chrome.
does anyone know where i can get the F-O-R-D letters for the front grill?
Awesome find!!!....I suspect no matter where you are..and $800 to boot....wow!!
All the best with the project...and keep the reports coming.
I love them old bronco's...hope I get to own one before I die....
Almost had one once....but, coulda, shoulda, woulda...
Great find and a great deal. I love the old Broncos, they were just such rust buckets that it was hard for them to avoid the junkyard. Good luck on the resto and post some pictures.
