motor oil question

early 99 F-250 7.3L PSD w/ 233k mi.... extended cab, long bed, 2wd. Edge Evolution programmer, muff. delete, 6637. My question is this; I have used Shell Rotella (dont know weight...sorry) for the last however many oil changes. Ive heard and read about people using full synthetic motor oil in their PSD's. What's all the fuss about w/ this synthetic??? Thanks in advance and HAPPY STROKIN !!

Better cold starts, longer time before oil changes (usually)....others will chime in with more reasons...

I second that, longer time between oil changes but get a oil analysis if you want to push it really far. Definitely helps when its cold out.

I agree with them, i recently did the switch and what a difference it made. Made cold starts easier with the remote starter and the motor is just running so much better.

I see you live in NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA. I don't think it gets cold enough there to see any major benefit on cold starts. If you're are getting a surging idle when you start it this would help to switch.

I have never used the synthetic oil in my truck. I live about as far south as you do, so we don't get that much cold weather down here. I was about to change to it because of the problem I had with my idle after the injectors, but Jody fixed that. I will keep using 15w-40 untill I NEED to switch.

I just made the switch to 5W-40 Synthetic and im really surprised at how much of a difference it is. I just remote started it, its 12* out right now, the GPs were lit for only 45 secs, and not plugged in, it started very easily! Runs smoother and is a tad quieter

You can go a full synthetic 5W-40 like Schaeffer's 9000 or Rotella Synth 5W-40. Both show excellent results on used oil analysis. You can go 7K with out an oil analysis and further with an analysis.

You could also go with a 15W-40 synthetic blend like Schaeffer's series 7000 15W-40, BTS uses this oil all the time. I push 8K with an oil analysis on this oil pulling our 30' 5th wheel. Also, Delo 400 15W-40 shows better results on a used oil analysis report compared to other dino 15W-40 oils.

Here is my oil analysis report from pulling our 30' 5th wheel 5,000 miles this past summer:
