I changed to synthetic at 2500 miles, used Rotella T synthetic. It was $12.98/gal at Walmart. They have the mobil1 synthetic for $4.77 but when you have to use 13.5 quarts that gets expensive! Here is a link that has been posted here b4 that you will find interesting: http://www.boss302.com/oil.htm
I actually spoke via email with the author & he said that the break-in is shortlived with the close tolerences in engines these days. He did say to be sure & use 15w40 diesel oil unless you are using a synthetic, which is 5w40. If you are in a cold climate the synthetic would probably do better. I used dino oil for the first change at 800 miles to get any crud or shavings out of the engine with original oil. Obviously everyone will have their opinion but that is mine. Hope it helps!

OilGuard has the original equipment filters for 11 dollars each in a six pack, free shipping. It is in my opinion and the strongest voice I can muster up …use nothing except the factory replacement filter, there are many out there that are cheap…and not good.
No one can really beat the price with OilGuard, and yes I support them they are one of our sponsors…

We have for months gone around on this issue because of coast, no longer can we say cost is a reason to skimp on a 50k truck.

I would use synthetic, better protection, longer drain intervals

Currently @ 12,300 miles...switched to Mobil Truck / SUV @ 10,000 miles (13.5 qrts). Will still change every 5,000 miles. Truck runs great.

question to Tinytrixie and all for that matter. I have 1400 miles on my new 05' 6.0 and did my first oil change at 1000 miles, filling with Delo 400- 15w40. Somebody brought to my attention that 15w40 shouldn't be used below a certain temp. In Michigan I'm quite certain we will see temps down to 0. My question is, is it too soon to switch to synthetic. That is my preference by all means leaning towards Rotella T. Anyways, any problems with your switch Tiny?

Look in your owner manual diesel supplement. 20F is the low end for the 15W-40 oil. Below that use a 10W-30 or a 5W-40 synthetic. I am using the Rotella T synthetic 5W-40. I have 25,000 miles plus on mine. I don't think it would hurt it.

I have read from a couple of sources to get 10,000 miles on a diesel before switching to synthetic.

I too have read the same about putting on about 10k before switching, really just looking for opinions or experiences in this event. I think I still have more questions to find answers for, perhaps call the local service dept and see what they are putting in during oil changes. Obviously it would be MC but I have heard of people just running 15w40 year round.
SBV45, I believe you might have been the one who brought to my attention that the 15w40 wasn't recommended. Thanks again.

I just had 10W30 put in my truck the other day. It was the dealers freebie and he said their diesels techs run 10W30 all year long. That was Harold Ziegler in Lowell.

I don't know if I can believe that 10W30 is good to run all year, but in the winter here in MI 15W40 can get kinda thick. Maybe I will try some synthetic at 5000, but I have read the same debates about the 10,000 miles before changing over to non-dino.

Question for Kw5413: None of the truck or SUV oils I have seen are rated CI4 for the 6.0. What do you run?

u dont need ci4 if u disconnect the egr.

and BTW, if any one wants my 2 cents, 10w-30 is just fine all year round for our little diesels because we're not dealing with the extreme film pressures of a big diesel.

Mobil Truck and SUV is rated CI-4. Here is the link to verify this statement.
