Tapping the water pump

I have a 5.0 motor with a serpentine setup. This makes the heater hose bend hard to make, so I want to pull the nipple out of the water pump and tap the hole. I believe that the edelbrock pump has this part tapped from the factory. Has anyone done this?

It shouldn't be too hard if you have the right NPT tap and the correst size tap drill. I'm guessing the hole for the pressed in fitting is not going to be the right size for the tap. I am also assuming you are going to need a 1/2" NPT tap. I wouldn't try this with the pump on the engine because there is no way to keep the cuttings from the tap out of the system. Tapping cast iron is a bit tricky as it doesn't act the same as steel. If the hole is near the edgs of the casting it might break out. If you need the tap drill size let me know and I'll look it up. I would recommend one size larger in cast iron especially if the hole is near an edge.

Later Man...
