My Dad can pull the key out of his ignition while the truck is running. He has an early 99 350 with a 7.3. Anyone else able to do this? Is something worn out in the ignition or what?
It starts fine and shuts off fine when he turns the key. He can just pull the key out and it stays running. Could his ignition fail in the near future?
Probably not fail but has he tried to start it without the key in it? It could be wore enough that the pins are in the keyed position and not moving so someone could get in it and go.
That's a good question. I'll have to ask him. Knowing him he's not too worried about. He doesn't really take it anywhere and he just screws around the farm with it.
I would look at what Tracy said above, others will chime in for you. One of my vehicles back in the day(1980,s)LOL, done that but i thought it was cool.
Every ford truck since high school as done it to me. 3 different trucks over 20 years. My current 4th truck does not. I miss that option that i had with the others. Needed the key to start it and as long as i didn't lock the ignition i could pull it out. No key needed. But if i turn the key to the lock position i needed the key to unlock it. Went weeks without a key because i lost them, but one day i turned the ignition switch to the lock position and i was screwed at the gas station. I ended up finding the keys in my tool box buried. Some days i wish my current truck did it. The first day i picked up my current truck i tried it to see if this truck did it. I was disappointed.

my 86 chevy dump did it and it was cool. on cold days i could pull the key-lock the door-leave the truck running with the heat on and go into a store or something withour worrying about it getting stolen and keeping the heat on.
