Flamethrowers

I have a 88 4.9L EFI that I want to make shoot flames. Is there any way I can make this happen? All the kits I see are for carburated trucks only. Is there enough unburnt fuel left in the exhaust?

all you gotta do is mount a sparkplug BEHIND the muffler and wire it into the battery with a dash mounted switch and whenever you want flames, just hit the switch. The spark ignights the unburnt fuel and you've done your part for the enviroment

I think my truck has cataletic converters on it but I'm not sure. Will it still work on my truck? Can I test to see if it will work before I install it, with a barbaque lighter?

well you're not going to get as much of a flame because the EFI in your truck is much more efficient than a carb and therefore allows less wasted gas to go through. I'm going to go check out that site though!

I have an idea what about running a regular flame thrower insted of changing your emissions? What I was thinking was plumb a fuel line out back running off it's own fuel pump and have it come out of a nozzle and then have some sort of ignition to start your flames. That way you can have your vechical running perfectly and have a flame thrower.
What do you guys think am I nuts or is my brain actually working?

Sounds a tad bit DANGEROUS to me, with it in your exhuast your getting the positive pressure "blowing" the flame out. I think with a nozzle and fuel pump set up you may get some flame back feed and perhaps a bit of a fire.

Just my thought

On the fuel line plumbing into the exhaust for a true flamethrower, definitely a BAD idea. I'd stick to the plug / unburned exhaust fume idea. The exhaust is too hot of an area to be plumbing fuel. As was mentioned in the above post, the flame could very well backfeed and cause an explosion. Also consider that EFI-controlled vehicles incorporate fuel shutoffs into the system to positively cut off the flow of fuel in the event of a collision, namely to prevent explosions and barbequed passengers in the event of a crash. The type of potential hazard the manufacturers try to avoid would be the exact type of hazard you'd be creating. I watched a guy in a cruise-through parking lot a few years back light up his exhaust tips...... he had a fuel plumbed system. After ignition, the flames lit up two small puddles of fuel that had leaked out onto the ground and sent 24" high flames up alongside the quarter panels, scorching his paint job. His buddy had to get out and start kicking the fire to try to extinguish it. Classy operation.

You cant just wire the plugs to the battery they have to be to a coil, which amplifies the voltage enough to create the spark. there is a rather lengthy thread on this a couple pages back, all kinds of info on it.

u wanna know somethin else i hear works? take off the Cats. and bash out the cone inserts with a hanger. then fill it with oil, and put it back on....but backwards. You should be able to spit flames then...at least thats the talk in my high school auto shop..haha. But ya, i've heard of the spark plug method in the exhaust.

All right boys lets settle down and think SAFTEY FIRST. Filling cats with oil??? yikes. Nozzles spraying fuel??.
Let me know where you guys are so I'm NOT!! I'll have 911 on speed dial for ya when I see the ploom of black smoke.

I would suggest if your going to try these highly dangerous ideas, dress approprietly and cruise around town in a fire suit.

When I ran flamers on my coupe, I had a remote 6 volt battery, plugs in the exhaust tips, but the main thing was a manual choke, that way you could choke till you got the excess gas down the pipes, hit the swith and flame. ALWAYS HAD A FIRE EXTINGUISHER at my finger tips just incase.
Now with efi, I dont know how your going to get around the lack of unburnt fuel, but please be carefull, I saw a guy burn in a race car and it was the most horrible thing I EVER SAW.

To get excess fuel in a efi, do what i did. Buy a truck and don't change the plugs for along time! lol. It would burn super rich, until i recently changed the plugs. The end electrode part was so bad that it looked like an upside down ice cream cone. the dang thing came to a tip!!! i changed them and now i tripled my gas milage!!!!! The bad plugs cause lots of unburnt gas.

I haven't done this yet, But I heard it is good to use propane. Run a fuel line from the tank in the trunk, like a nitrous bottle, down to the exhaust with a spark plug. Since the propane doesn't leave a residue, you don't have to worry about it burning after the fact. Not sure how good it would work, but it is another idea.
