Dave,
I hope you flushed all components with a proper solvent??
I'm not an expert, but have been led to believe that the different oils
from r12 and 134a become highly corrosive if mixed together.
Gene
You're on the right track :) but it's not the oils, it's the freons themselves
that react with each other.
R134a is smaller so it needs "barrier hoses" but hoses "contaminated" with
R12 block 134a's escape so new hoses and seals aren't "needed" for that
reason. They are "desired" to limit the corrosive reaction byproducts tho.
R134a is faster at gaining and releasing heat so "they" tend to change out
the condenser too, to one that has "more parallel paths" than the original
did, that was best with the slower R12.
134a carries less heat so "they" tend to like a higher volume compressor,
like "Bill the ND" was talking about.
You know... :/
There's things that just can't be posted about A/C systems here. :/
Political correctness and gov't snitches have limited speech about it all.
Remember back when?
People would all the time say...
"it's a free country :)" as an answer to different ways of doing things.
What happened to that? :/
Bill,
My truck has the "special screw clamps" on it. They have the little tab that is suppose to keep them from blowing off. One end typically has a screw on fitting, the other is cut to fit and has screw clamp.

That's the clamp I was refering to. The edges of that little tab are sharp....got cut more than once making up those hoses.
well i just eliminated the gooseneck metal fittings that go to the condensor and dryer, instead now i have custom goodyear barrier hoses with 90 degree fittings and such, then i put wiffle waffers around all my hoses, the insulation tubing. those fittings were just so corroded on the inside there was no hope for flushing. site glass and check valve is gone. r12, ahem,
