I used to have flowmasters on my truck and they sounded great. When I redid the exhaust I put cherrybombs on. They are loud and proud!! I have mine exiting out the sides in front of the rear wheels.
THats what Im gunna do. Cheaper, and not everybody does that. Why not be different?
Maybe its just a wives tale, but Ive heard that putting them right in front of the rear wheel can help improve horsepower at higher speeds, because the air being displaced by the tire creates a vacume that pulls the exhaust from the pipe, causing more air flow.
Maybe they were just talking out their a$$, but it sounds good anyway.
Too bad I didn't take pictures of the insides of my original Y pipe. :(
I cut mine off just behind the junction and ground-out the insides
of-the-sorry-piece-of-crap and I'm trying real hard to be nice. ;)
One pipe is welded to the side of another pipe, right? :)
Well there's a hole cut into the side of the "straight" pipe.
The hole Ford cut in mine was smaller than a golf ball (put your index
finger and thumb tips together) and shaped like a football and ragged
and looked to be simply torch-cut by hand.
A jack ball would prob'ly just squeeze through the ragged hole.
After reworking the insides and welding it all back together it felt as
if I'd gained about two cylinders. When a guy sez headers "wakes an
engine up" I figure he ain't kiddin because when he put the headers
on, most times the Y pipe comes out at the same time, so he gets a
double whammy. ;)
are you talking about a blowing sound like an exhaust leak?
yes, glasspacks are great. on my truck I have the Flowmaster 10 series. it's a single chamber muffler. I love it. since they don't sell them anymore when I redo my exhaust I'll probably get some Cherry Bomb Extremes.
Ok, that's a 2+1/2" in-n-out version of "Project's" evilBay muffler.
How's it going to sound compared to my 45" cherry bomb?
Better?
Louder?
A lot louder?
Since I don't want it much louder than what I've got...
What would you guys suggest I try?
I also believe that a 3" exhaust is too large for your engine and that is why you're not getting the sound your looking for, 2-1/2" is as large as you want to go for a small block V8. Many people make the assumption that bigger is always better, but this is not the case when it comes to street vehicles. Another area many automotive enthusiast make the wrong choice, is in the area of carb/intake selection. Many think they want the biggest double pumper carb (750-850CFM) on top of the tallest single plane intake on their small block V8 to make their street ride perform, but this will actually hurt street performance. The better choice for street applications is a dual plane intake with no more than a 600-650CFM vacuum secondary carb. If you use one of the carb selection calculators for a typical small bloc V8 engine you will find it will only use between 450 to 550 CFM at WOT. The bottom line is that your carb/intake and exhaust system needs to be matched to your engine displacement for optimum performance and sound. Going too big or small will rob your engines ability to make power and run efficiently. Don't get me wrong by thinking you can't improve your stock engines performance with a new carb, intake, and performance exhaust. My point is bigger is not always better when it comes to engine upgrades.
yup yup...y pipe with a single glasspack sounds ok at idle, but under power sounds just wrong. if your going to run the stock Y pipe, at least get a single inlet, dual outlet muffler, this way the exhaust gets a chance to break apart the sound waves to create a deeper sound. If you were to get an exhaust shop to work on your exhaust (without a cat), then it should cost no more the 120 bucks for them to split the Y and run duals out each side, or run a single in dual out muffler(single chamber or 2 chamber) and run the both out the pass side. which would lead me to the last statement..if you have a catalytic converter then that may be plugged, and depending on your state, you may have to pick up a 60 dollar cat.
everyone has different taste thats what makes the world go around if u like glasspacks then by al means run them and make them talk same with flowmasters which is my choice
Haha my old man sold me my truck, it was in bad bad shape. I put exhaust on it with a muffler but didn't like the tone, my pops said glasspacks would be way to loud and he wouldn't let me do it. So I did it anyway, sounded tons better, than like two weeks later he says to me, "your truck sounds different" haha I just smiled and said "it does? huh" lmao
had a 1990 that made the air rush sound and it was a blocked cat. my 04 had flowmasters and had a good sound but not very loud. now have heartland glass on my 76 and it is the best sound i have had. 2 1/2 in. pipes and the inside of the muffler is also 21/2
Just got my new exsaust last week.. 351M true dual 2 1/4 pipe with 2 18" glasspacks. they exit right before the back tires on both sides. Its extremely sound but has a GOOD deep rumble. no pops or whistles. If thats too loud. run it out the back like any other sensible person. Mines so dang loud i had to shut the truck off at the McDs drivethru 2 order, and it echoes off of anything beside you...Its Great!!!
3" is probly your problem. 2 1/4 is quite sufficiant for that 351.
FYI... Chrrey Bombs n the traditional manner( long and skinny, slightly larger than the pipe its on, with a louvered core) ARE in fact Glasspacks. Inside the louvers is packed w fiberglass.
Make sure the mufflers are installed in the correct direction?? Ran accross this once mufflers installed backwards. I don't think this is your problem but start with the simple stuff.
ok the Cherry Bomb Extremes usually run about $51. the IMCO Extremes run about $29. they're both made by IMCO, but Cherry Bomb has a name so that's why they're a lot more expensive.
my buddy got the exhaust shop to put his 2 8" Cherry Bomb glasspacks on backwards. omg it's loud. I love riding with him when people look at us and wonder, "what's that thing got?"
projectbad78, if I look on Ebay for single chamber muffler I'll at least look for the 10 series.
great point brought up. if you have a catalytic converter then it's very possible that it's clogged up.
